One of the most mysterious attractions of Zhukiv island is the unfinished rail tunnel under the Dnieper River, the so-called "Stalin's underground" (subway), or Construction Object #1. Now it is largely a waterlogged water pit of 600 meters, but it still indicates a once ambitious large-scale project perfectly well. Stalin began this construction in 1936 in order to strengthen the Kiev fortification. The plan was to make the transition from the Zhukiv island to Osokorki under the river, so that the underground tunnel would ensure the connection between two banks of Kyiv in case the bridges are ruined by the enemy. The connection was supposed to be large enough so that trains could pass through. This secret project then involved the village of Korchevatoye, used as a storage for materials and a mechanical repair plant. To cover the construction, there was a ship repair and maintenance base developed on the Dnieper River. The project involved twelve thousand workers. But it only lasted until the Second World War. After the war, the object has become obsolete, and its further construction became impractical. In 1974, when Kanev hydroelectric station was launched and the water level in the Dniper river increased, the tunnel appeared under water by half. Today the interest to this historic object is being gradually restored. There are official tours taking visitors to three various object of Stalin metro complex; including in the boats.

Stalin’s Subway is not a subway! It is a system of tunnels under Dnipro river which was built before WWII to war's needs. Now it is a place where young people climb around and paint graffiti!
