- JSTrip_77Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina1,233 contributionsPeaceful and HistoricI was in town for business and just couldn't leave the city without visiting this park with all of its historical structures and monuments. It was a different experience during different times of the day. In the early morning, I was there jogging. At lunch time, there were school groups and random people just enjoying the natural environment. In the evening, there were lots of young people and couples taking advantage of the large area to roam. There were also small stands to buy souvenirs and food.Visited November 2023Written 3 December 2023
- tushar_paiMilton Keynes, United Kingdom4,094 contributionsRespite from the heatThe park is expansive and located at one end of the city on the banks of the river. Multiple entry points into the park. On a hot day, it was amazing to be inside the park with the tree cover. Since it is located high up it was also nice and breezy. The Belgrade Fortress is located inside the park and there is a zoo as well. After walking around we went to Boho bar where we sat for a couple of hours before making our way back to the city centre.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 22 June 2024
- Jared22 contributionsVery nice park and cool fortress! Not a ton of historical information though. This is a really cool fortress surrounded by a large, open park. The park itself is very nice and clean with a lot of places to rest. The elevation provides a great view of Belgrade and the Danube. It was sunny and 100°F (38C) when we were there, so we didn't spend too much time loitering in the park but there were some nice benches in the shade under big trees where we enjoyed ice cream from a vendor in the park. The fortress, like the park, is a large and open area. The fortress is higher and closer to the water so the views were amazing. There wasn't much information about the fortress to read, it is more of a wandering around activity. The architecture was fairly interesting but it was a lot of locked buildings, the experience is more about seeing the outdoor parts like the walls i think. The highlight of the fortress for us was the underground well that goes hundreds of feet deep. The fortress grounds are free to enter, except the section with the well has a very very small fee to enter. It showed some interesting information on how the well was dug, and I think it was the coolest room in all of Belgrade on that day! There's also a small section with dinosaur statues in case your kids get bored lolVisited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2024
- BalkrishnaShroffMumbai, India26,092 contributionsA Great Park n Historical Fortress !!We came here in our walking tour from river cruise. This park has got a lot of history behind it. It is the biggest park in Serbia spread over 130 acres with thousands planted here. There is a café with wash room facility for the convenience of travelers. As we pass the beautiful and peaceful garden, we come across this historical fortress. It is located 400 feet above the sea level overlooking the confluence of rive Save n Danube. The view from top was stunning. This fortress has hot a history of almost 2000 years. It has seen the rise and fall of many civilizations. This entire complex has got many interesting things to see like Zoo, Military Museum, Clock Tower, Turkish Bath, Victor Monument and Underground Tunnels. Many public events like art exhibitions, theatre performances and music concerts take place here. Another event 5 day beer fest with live music and delicious food is held here annually which is very popular with locals and tourists.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 12 September 2024

The castle is located right on the hill where Sava and Danube rivers meet. Stambol Kapja (Istanbul Gate), Defterdar Gate and Dungeon Gate, which were built in the 1700s, are the Gates for entering /exiting the castle. It is believed that there is the grave of Atilla under the castle. The castle is one of the most visited historical buildings of the city with its parks, historical buildings, monuments and museums in a total area of 53 hectares. There is a fountain built by Sokollu Mehmet Pasha in 1578, the tomb of Damat Ali Pasha, the place where many Pashas we call Pasha Mansion and the cruise hill of Kanuni Sultan Suleyman. When you proceed right in front of the Istanbul Gate built by the Ottomans, you will see heavy weapons such as tanks and missiles from the First World War on the open air section. In the ditch at the exit of the castle, Dinosaurs Park is among the places to be visited in the castle. The entrance to the castle, which is open to the public, is free.

Large park with old shady trees covering the top of a hill, around the Belgrade Fortress. The fortress itself is actually located inside the park. It worth visiting mainly for the views over Belgrade. The most spectacular sight is the confluence of Danube with Sava River. Cruise ships mooring at the Sava quay and various boats floating lazy on the Danube can be spotted from the park. There are some kiosks from one can buy beer, soft drinks and popcorn. Watching the sunset from a bench in the park, with a can of local beer in one hand and some popcorn in the other was a relaxing experience. While strolling in the park, we discovered some interesting statues, like the one of a fisherman fighting a snake. Overall, it's a good place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The Romans built the first fortification in the 2nd century but Belgrade fortress has been rebuilt many times; the last time being in the 18th Century, so there is architectural history of Romans, Serbs, Turks, and Austro-Hungarians in one building. It is impressive from the outside. Covid 19 restrictions prevented an internal visit.
Kalemegdan Park surrounds the fortress and contains other attractions but these were also closed. The museums of medieval torture and of weapons the chapels and the zoo will have to wait for another visit. The dinosaur exhibit and war vehicles were impressive enough even at a distance.
The main draw for me was the view over the confluence of the Danube and Sava, and over the rivers to New Belgrade. There are plenty of benches on the city walls from which to admire the view. The landscaping is not as impressive as many parks in capital cities but the views make up for this. There are a few cafes, so take a snack and watch the sunset.
The fortress looks even more spectacular after dark when it is lit. The park’s free and open 24 hours. Outdoor chess games were going on into the evening.
This iconic Belgrade attraction is worth a visit just for the views but offers more.

I love Kalemegdan. I’ve been to Belgrade three times to visit friends, and each time we find something new. There are excellent views over the city from here, and the fort is incredibly interesting; lovely old architecture of historical importance, and the park is used by so many people daily.
You can sit and enjoy some popcorn, or go to a restaurant in the ground for fresh lemonade and other drinks; there’s even a nightclub situated inside. There’s a dinosaur park for kids and also the zoo, which has improved a lot in terms of animal welfare since my first visit.
This time I went on a tour with friends in Serbian, with our friends translating to English, and saw the catacombs, Roman well and manmade caves underneath. The catacombs contain one of the earliest Christian graves from the second century where the carvings are beautiful.
It is well worth visiting Kalemegdan more than once during your time in Belgrade and booking on to a tour - these will be available in various languages - as well as spending an evening here relaxing as the locals do.

This is the most typcial sight seeing place in Belgrade. The fortress and the walls surround a big area and you walk within 20-30 mins. The castle has a city view and also you can see from the top also the river view. You must see.

This is one of those places where there is plenty to do or see, and something for everyone. Entry to the fortress and park is free. There’s an open air military museum with displays of various artillery and tanks which is free, but most of the other museums inside are not. There is a dinosaur park for children, which definitely isn’t free.
The grounds of the park are extensive and bounded to the north at the junction of the River Sava and the Danube. The fortress itself is one of the main attractions. Much of the inner walls are intact, but the outer walls are mostly ruined. With views overlooking the river and Belgrade below, the fortress would’ve been formidable. There are many monuments inside Kalemegdan Park and the fortress. If you’re interested in immersing yourself in Serbian history and culture, the monuments to the many Serbian personalities is a great way to do it. I thought the best things to see are the beautiful churches of Ružica Church and Saint Petka Church. Both have some amazing mosaics and paintings.

Kelamegdan is one of the places where you can spend time to the fullest in Belgrade. It is an excellent open-air museum. Considering that the winds of history do not blow in the city, this is an enjoyable historical tour with its unique view of the Danube. You can also visit the tombs and cultural houses left over from the Ottoman Empire. It is surprising that the names of some locations are still transferred to Serbian culture in Turkish. Their names, such as the clock tower, the treasurer's gate, etc., have been preserved. I also recommend that you do not pass by without checking out the souvenir shops in the city, which are cheap and high quality.

The citadel, the views of both rivers, the history, the churches, and the atmosphere all around is awesome. You could easily spend a whole day here and not get tired. I highly recommend going there late afternoon, as the sunset is spectacular!

Kalemegdan Park and Belgrade Fortress is a wonderful complex located in the upper part of Belgrade, the main city in Serbian Country. In the fortress, you can see some very interesting places like Military Museum (where you can see weapons and the history of the most important battles and moment in Serbian region), some gates like Zindan Gate (wonderful!), Leopold Gate or the gate of the Clock Tower. From here, there are great views of Danube and Sava, and the place where both rivers join. Also, in the surroundings of the fortress, in the park, it is possible see the Monument to Gratitude to France or the Chapel of St. Petka as the main important places.
A wonderful fortress to learn about Serbia, walk, run or do sport, relax or only see views.

The current fortress is situated on the site where Belgrade was founded during the Roman era in the 1st century AD and on which it developed right down to the second half of the 18th century.
The fortress we see today had its walls reinforced around the mid-18th century--the red bricks date from the brief period of the Austrian occupation and the gray stonework is Ottoman.
The walls of the fortress encircle the old 15th century Acropolis or the Upper Town, when Belgrade was proclaimed the Serbian capital in 1404.
