- Tony H22 contributionsInteresting, Nice walkWe went on a cold quiet weekday so had the place to ourselves really. Was a nice walk round looking at the lovely old buildings (and admiring the huge selection of stray cats that seem to live there) The place is a lot bigger than it looks and is really well kept. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. There is some lovely looking gardens next door but it was quite icy when we went so didn’t want to risk slipping. Probably wouldn’t go again but it was interesting and gave us something to do without having to travel too far from the airport.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 February 2024

Take a step back in time and see how Romania has developed over the years and that of its dwellings and methods of production. - John A CarterLower Sackville, Canada5,629 contributionsBest place to visit in the city. This is one of the best places to go if you’re interested in architectural in the past. There’s like 300 buildings all from the past Adam brought here from all over Romania most wooden structures. They really show the differences of the way they lived 100 years ago compared to now, some of the buildings are only 100 years old but could’ve easily been 300. This is a must see for anybody who likes old buildings.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 24 March 2024

Mod5 buildings are locked but you can see in some through the windows. There is also a pleasant restaurant half way in where we stopped for a cold beer and a wine. Worth the visit.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024

Great outdoor "museum" of old buildings, showcasing history in a really concrete way. You can even enter some of the buildings to see reconstructed rooms. There is a lot of them as well, so you can definitely spend a whole day here learning about everything. Obviously it's not very fun rainy day activity and there won't be any places to really 'keep the rain' either. There are restrooms at the site, though there could definitely be couple more of those around the area.

We went in June and it was a lovely day with a lot going on, very festive, a lot of things to see here and feels like a good taste of Romania, especially how it was in her past. You could easily spend the better part of a day in the nice weather season. You stroll through at your own pace and see what is going on in different areas. I liked that they had some people on the grounds selling hand made Romanian things to take back home. They also have an official gift store inside the building near the entrance. There were small enactment type plays going on and music, etc. Overall, a walk going back in time and it was very enjoyable.!

My wife and I visited Muzeul National al Satului Dimitrie Gusti on Sunday 15th May and we had a fantastic afternoon wandering around the museum.
We jumped on the airport bus from the old town and got of off at the Arcul de Triumf and it was only a couple of minutes up the road.
Entry fee was only 20 Lei, which is about 4€, great value for money.
We ended up spending around four hours at the museum, about three hours was wandering around all the interesting house and for the last hour we were lucky to have visited on a day when a traditional Romanian music and dance show was on.
Overall, a really enjoyed visit on a nice sunny day to a interesting museum.
Definitely worth a visit.

I visited this open air museum many times in my youth. Now... for reasons I do not understand, with the exception of ONE house, all of the houses were lock closed. The purpose of this museum is allow the visitors to see how the peasants lived, what tools they used in their homes... One could get an idea of what was inside by looking at pictures posted outside. ut pictures I can see on the internet. At least they could keep a lightning inside so you could have a peek through the windows... But nope. It is a lack of respect for the visitors.

The Village Museum in Bucharest, Romania, is a must-see for anyone who wants to find out more
about the traditional way of life in historic Romania. The exhibition currently running focuses on The
Art of Upper Embroidery in Women’s Traditional Shirts. The exhibition is a display of exquisite yarn
art. The display of traditional Romanian houses is a feast for the eyes and offers some serious food
for thought, as the architecture and building techniques employed take into consideration the
specifics of different environments, climates and natural oddities that could have had an impact on
the inhabitants.
The visit at the museum was enriching for me, as it allowed me to see “in real life” and explore
different types of dwelling in traditional Romania, different styles of dressing and, ultimately, gave
me an insight into the culture of my ancestors.
I would definitely recommend the experience to both foreigners who want to learn more about
Romanian, and to people who have a cultural Romanian heritage and who would like to deepen
their knowledge of it, like myself.

Every house was closed, if we would have known this before then we wouldn't have bothered making the journey all the way there as it's a bit further out from Bucharest city centre. Transport links are awful to the museum so we even ended up getting a taxi there, however it was in the top things to do in Bucharest so we thought it couldn't be missed.
We basically walked around looking at huts, not very interesting ones at that. When we had looked online, it looked like an interesting museum as we were under the impression you could enter the houses to see the history of Romanian village life.
One door to a house was open wide, so we went to walk in, there was a worker nearby sweeping leaves- when we walked up the steps to enter she started screaming/shouting at us and approached us very aggressively; we had no idea what she was saying as we don't speak Romanian. We walked away as I'm guessing we couldn't enter but the door was open so were naturally just going to have a look inside. We ended up leaving shortly after that, we tried to get our moneys worth by reading the plaques outside the little buildings but we've never been so bored and felt so uncomfortable. The whole place was basically empty at midday except from staff who made us uncomfortable by staring at us whilst we were walking around. You might as well stroll through Herastrau Park for free and save yourself 30 lei per person.
Shocked that this is included in the top things to do in Bucharest, we left within 30 mins of being there but trust me it was a struggle to even stay 30 mins. Waste of time and money and all workers we encountered were rude.

It is an open air museum located in a green park in Bucharest. From the city center either you can walk to the north direction through Arc de Triump (for 1,5 hour) or take a taxi/bus/car. You can see the different types of rural houses belonged to various geographic area in Romania as well as to different historic periods. However, we did not see much because many of the houses were closed. In the area, there are also some cafés and restaurants to visit.

I really loved the museum, it is wonderful, especially during summer/spring. I come here a few times a year and always enjoy the presence of cats. There are dozens of cats in the museum, sleeping lazy in the sun or accepting cuddles from strangers.
If you go to this museum bring cat food with you as the cats are fed by volunteers and happily accept more
Ps: would love to see magnets with the village museum houses and the cats as well

Visited this in November with my sister and found it an enjoyable place to spend an hour. It is a large space full of different houses and buildings from various regions and time periods. I had never seen anything like it so it was fun seeing the various architecture. Some of the buildings had people stationed inside to tell you about the building (we had a wonderful guide tell us about a house/wine producing location) but this was rather hit or miss as some of the people just stood there while we went inside. I also would have appreciated a few more maps stationed throughout the park because it was large and we got rather lost. There were a bunch of friendly cats that interacted with us as we walked through however, which was delightful.

This is one of my favourite place since I was a kid. Now, although an young adult, I was excited to see a new part, the new wing of the museum and I've discovered new places, for instance the big church that it was for the first time that I've visited inside. All the paths are beautiful and have gems of the romanian villages from all traditional backgrounds. Simply splendid, I always have new emotions and I refresh my old memories and create new ones. Thank you for that!

I would like to visit the museum on my way to the airport but I'll carry baggage with me... Is there a luggage storage round? (The closest I found at Google is on Bucharest). Thank you!
Written 18 February 2023
I did not see any areas for luggages at the open air Museum. Maybe you could ask the hotel reception to call them and enquire. Sorry I can’t help you on this.

May I know is the Bucharest Muzeul National is almost the same as Astra Open Museum in Sibiu? Thank you!
Written 12 November 2019
No they are not really the same at all. One is in a large building in the city and the other is an open air museum of buildings to the north of the city. I would suggest that you use either Trip Adviser or a your browser to research each one for the details. best wishes, Rodney

Looking at Visiting on a Sunday in October..... Will it be very busy ? Should I drive or get UBER from Hotel. We are visiting from Australia... thanks
Written 23 August 2019
I walked or took Uber everywhere. If you use the yellow cabs only do so by getting hotels or restaurants to book for you and get an idea of fare before you go. You didn’t say which hotel you will be at. Mr Tripp, the travel agent on Victory Avenue, is good for free maps and other information.
Written 23 August 2019
what's the best way to get here? is there a pass for these places including travel? thanks
Written 18 August 2018
Heh Peekayy, we just did Uber everywhere, incredibly cheap, convenient, no worries with unscrupulous drivers, it's what Romanians do if they can afford. Navigating busses and metro may sound fine before you get there, however we gave up after the first attempt. On balance convenience and cost wise Uber came tops every time.

Can one pay with credit card or euros or will I need to get Romanian currency before I visit? I couldn’t find on their website or internet search.
Your help you’ll be appreciated.
