When visiting the Dolac market, I saw this statue and wondered what it was about. In doing a bit of research when home after the holidays, I found out that he was a prophet and social commentator of the time. He was renowned for wearing jesters and traditional peasant clothing. He seen playing a mandolin all the while wearing a noose around his neck while it looks like the people around him are dying. Its a thought provoking statue that I spent a while looking at to try and figure out what was going on. A good statue up the back of the market well worth a look at.

This is a statue of Petrica Kerempuh, a folk character from the Balkans and central European literature, and folk tales. In this statue he is depicted as a minstrel, singing and commenting on contemporary events. Two men are also depicted and appear to be dying, in reference to his commentary on the oppression of peasants. A wonderful sculpture.

Really cool statue depicting the Peasants revolting against the Kingdom. It's located right at the market, and worth the stop!

The Statue of Petrica Kerempuh holding a mandolin standing among his countryman is located on Petrica Kerempuh Square on the upper part of Dolac Market. You can miss it as it is partly hidden among the stalls. This lovely statue is the work of Vanja Radaus. Hewas a Croatia's National Jester, he was described as a thin man wearing peasant cloths and a hat with a feather attached to it, occasionally carrying a mandolin on his back.. he was a trickster a wanderer who traveld the world. His most notable incarnations can be found in the book ' The Ballads of Petrica Kerempuh ' by Miroslav Krleza.

In our walking tour in the old town, our tour group came by this statue and our local guide had given us a detailed story behind it.
So to keep the story short, there were 3 people (prisoners to be exact) that formed the statue and the other 2 were already hang to death and left this fictional figure Petrica Kerempuh, but he too would also be put to death soon. But he maintained a "positive and optimistic" attitude by playing the musical instruments and sang to keep his spirits high though facing a death penalty.
Isn't this mentality and mindset important for all of us today when under heavy stress and facing grave situations at work, school or relationship matters? The educational aspect is positive, no matter how bad the situation we're, we must try to maintain a positive and optimistic outlook and not affected by the negativity!

It's an interesting statue near the old city. It is really sad because the main character is near two prisoners or something like that, with ropes around their necks.

Literally translated his name means “Peter The Belly,” but he is usually described as a thin man. He wears peasant clothes with a few rough patches. He has a hat with a bird feather attached to it, and occasionally carries a tamburica on his back (a kind of a small guitar). A trickster and a wanderer, he travels the world and outsmarts his opponents with his wit and intelligence. What's there not to love?

My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to Harat's Irish Pub up by Dolac Market and chanced upon Statue Of Petrica Kerempuh and what a great find.
The work of sculptor Vanja Radaus ,it depicts Petrica Kerempuh ,a fictional Croatian jester and trickster who was renowned for wearing peasant clothing ,the statue shows Petrica Kerempuh with a feather in his cap playing a guitar or mandolin with a noose around his neck and prisoners strapped to a pole ,it's a very cool statue and well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate on Kaptol.

... which our tour guide was able to impart. The sculptor was Vanja Radaus (1955).
Apparently the sculpture is of fictional characters notably Petrica Kerempuh who appeared in literary works by Croatian writer Miroslav Krleza ... the most notable being " Ballads of Petrica Kerempuh " .
<<< This is a collection of 30 poems written by Miroslav Krleža in 1936 and "sing" of human suffering, persecution and social injustice, from the point of view of poor peasants, through Croatia’s long history of oppression within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Petrica Kerempuh is their satyric bard.>>>
The character has such resonance with Croatia's plight that a musical/play was adapted by Darko Rundek in 2008.
Located on the edge of DOLAC MARKET square this Statue is a walk by attraction, but how much more it means if you know some details.
