We went along to the anties fair at Uttoxeter racecourse, badly organised. We had arrived early fair enough, there was no one around to ask so we wandered in, no signage either. Suddenly greeted by an obnoxious woman who literally marched us back through the gate. We thought we would give it a go so waited in our car till the entry time. A few minutes to go I asked if I could nip in and use the toilets (as I had already been waiting in the car for an hour) she eventually agreed and abruptly told my husband he could not go as he went before. What is this?? It was like secret service, totally out of order and no idea about customer service. The only time she was in the slightest way polite is when she was taking our fiver to get in. If we had not drove an hour to get there we would have told her to shove it. There were a good variety of stalls (would not say 130 as advertised) some of the stall holders had left there stuff out overnight so it was soaking wet from the rain. While the catering was good value and the breakfast rolls were tasty, don't expect variety here it was one trailer van outside, we were able to use an inside room to eat it so that was a bonus. Insde was very warm heaters on that was nice. I suppose we are used to well organised events such as Malvern, this is absolutely not like that it was OK. Considering we spent a couple of hundred quid once in there feel disappointed by the awful attitude of the organiser.

I couldn’t find any hours for the “fair” listed online, so I took a chance and went on a Saturday afternoon. I think these vendors have been trained to spot a tourist from a kilometer away.

It was difficult to browse the items comfortably without being interrupted by vendors who assumed you had money to spend. It was also difficult to take photos with the vendors watching you like a hawk.

I ended up buying a Bulgaria sticker for 4 Lev. To me, that was an outrageously inflated price, but I just let it go.

As an antique lover, I’m glad I went. But, I would be lying if I said that it was a large “fair” or one that was super pleasant.

This is probably one of the most unique flea markets i've visited, please note I do not claim to be a flea market expert. There are probably 30 vendors who sell mostly used or old items. You can get your russian style fur hats, knives, army flasks, war medals etc. not your usual tourist fare and intersting to see what's been hiding in some peoples closets.

My review is only for one seller. This is the one who sells old silver cameras. Absolutely runaway scam. After a week, the one I bought for him doesn't work anymore. I went back and he told me that I broke it... I've been using this type of device for years, I know how to do it. He didn't want to hear anything... Don't buy him anything.

Cheap silver jewelry (you have to negotiate price). Downside is - every stall has Nazi artifacts and taking into account just that - will not be interested to go there anymore.

This is where you buy overpriced tourist souvenirs and commie/nazi memorabilia.

If you're looking for a real flea market and an actual authentic experience, try to visit Bitaka (aka Malashevtsi market) on Saturday morning - you might even find the same things (identical, be it slightly less maintained Bulgarian communist medal from the '80s, found at Bitaka for 2 leva, was pushed here for 20 leva, litteraly the same, just a bit polished up). Expect colourful faces, Eastern vibes, loads of randomness (old coins next to old shoes next to used batteries next to old postcards next to old bras next to DVDs next to car spare parts next to chipped kitchen ware etc) and gypsy music. Generally safe atmosphere, but be aware of potential pickpockets. Just take the bus 86 at the Lion's bridge towards Malashevtsi and after about 10 minutes get off when you see the Kaufland. Just follow the crowd (most will get off at Kaufland anyway), impossible to miss. Probably my most colourful impressions of a week long Bulgaria trip.

Icons next to pornographic paintings; portraits of Stalin next to old cameras and coins etc. All for sale against steep prices, probably because of the location in front of Nevsky cathedral. Butika flea market is much better and a lot cheaper.

To get there take bus 86 at Lions bridge.

Why buy magnets and postcards and other usual souvenirs when you can purchase original items from long ago and take a piece of Bulgarian history back home?! I personally love to mingle with the folks at flea markets and learn a thing or two so this was nice. Unique soviet pieces, handmade toys, old rings etc etc at low prices plus mini history lessons at every corner! Friendly locals selling old things which will become valuable to you too. All in all, upon leaving I felt like I visited my grandparents and got a little special something from them to take back home! They are there rain or shine. Between Alexander Nevsky and the Russian church.

There are two flea markets near the Cathedral, one takes place on a public road closed specially for the market by the police. This takes place once a month on Ulitsa Oborishte. Well worth a visit.
There is another near the monument of Bulgarian Volunteers selling Nazi stuff and other old stuff of little importance.
