He lived here for the final 26 years of his life. It is now an excellent museum, vividly conveying the polymath's life. Many of the rooms are faithfully preserved as they were in his time.

In his study, which has an early telephone, is his delightful and faithful little dog Bobby who was stuffed after a fatal accident.

Numerous monochrome photographs cover his lifetime, including those of his birthplace and childhood home, and notably of his family.

He was married briefly and never remarried. His mother moved in and she looked after the home for him.

He is most famous for the book Under the Yoke, but he published many novels, plays and poems. The exquisite National Theatre is named in his honour.

He was awarded a multitude of honours and scrolls during his lifetime. One well presented is the occasion of his seventieth birthday when he received a Royal visit.

I went there on a mild rainy saturday. The atmosphere is quite authentic and inspiring. Would advise to visit with guide icluded , otherwise you’ll not be able to feel all the magic.
