Pretty landmark

A pretty, beautifully designed Mausoleum; the burial place of Prince Alexander the First of Bulgaria, the first ruler of early-modern Bulgaria (Principality of Bulgaria.)

It's right next to the University of Sofia and opposite the very beautiful Knyazheska Gardens which hosts the monument to Soviet and Bulgarian soldiers, so if you are visiting the park it is only a minute walk away.

Fitting final place of repose

After Liberation the nascent state chose Prince Aleksandur Batenberg as its first leader. Not without difficulties in dealing with the more radical politicians, he was eventually forced into abdication.

This is a fine tribute to the first ruler. An attractive domed pavilion holds the entombed Prince. Simple ornamentation with garlands and Royal emblems enhance the tranquility of his final place of repose.

Nice stop off

Nice place to drop in to if you are walking south from the Alexsandur Nevski Church. Its a small tomb (free entry) with an English translation of his importance to Bulgaria as its first post independence monarch. Strange how a German volunteer in the Russian army became king of Bulgaria. Note that Batenberg is the previous family name for the English royal family which would have made him a relative of Queen Vic( monarch not pub).

Must visit while walking through the city

This is the final resting place of Prince Alexander I of Bulgaria, who the first Head of State of Bulgaria after being liberated from the Ottoman Empire. Although he died in exile (Graz 1893) he final wish was to be buried in Bulgaria for which they built this mausoleum.

This is a must see location for everybody who would like to know a bit more about the history of Bulgaria and it's located pretty much in the center of town close to the National football stadium and Alexander Nevsky church.

It's not a big location so you will be done in no time but the building, location and respect given by the Bulgarian really makes it worth while.

This building might not be a must when you visit Sofia, but if you have time you can visit it and admire its dome.

Beautiful resting place

Located in an inconspicuous place, the lovely little mausoleum, is the burial place of Prince Alexander the First of Bulgaria. Free to visit, and not much really to see, it is a major part of Bulgarian history. and worth a visit if in the vacinity. Before he died, he stated he wanted burried in Bulgaria, after dying in Graz, Austria in exile, and got his wish, after initially being burried there. . The mausoleum was restored in 2005
