Not only is this a museum, but also a working Medresa. I had the privilege to be in Sarajevo to see a graduation ceremony of students finishing their schooling years. The following day I visited the museum. This is a very special city with a long history and a bright future.

The museum is rather small, but informative. You can see the history of Sarajevo. They also have one of the tombstones that enlisted on the Unesco heritage

It was established in 1537, by then the Ottoman Empire governor of Bosnia, Gazi Husrev-beg, for the education of the people of the region. In the charter for its creation, the governor stipulated that "whatever money remains from the construction of the madrasa shall be used for purchasing good books, which will be used in the madrasa by readers, and for copying from them by those who engage in science." Thus, it represents one of the oldest European high schools, much older than many universities in the West

Gazi Husrev Begova Medresa is probably the most important medresa (a medresa is the school in the Muslim countries) in Sarajevo. It is located in the Bascarsija (old town), near the Mosque. It was built in the 16th century by ottomans. Really, it is so beautiful and it is possible to enter and contemplate the fabulous building. Here you can understand that Sarajevo (and all Bosnia&Herzegovina) have been a Muslim country during a lot of centuries (until 1878). Also in the medresa there is an exposition, where you can learn a lot about the life in it during centuries. Moreover, it is interesting see all complex (the mosque, the medresa and the library). A very good visit in the old town of Sarajevo.

You remain stunned when you learn that this what is simplified called "the coranic school" by many Westerners was in fact a prototype of today's Sarajevo university, a school where not only religion was taught, but also mathematics, astronomy and numerous other sciences - giving Sarajevo advantage over many European universities

Old Islamic school, XVIth century, a part of the medieval history of Sarajevo. Interesting museum. Worth to pay a visit for understanding Bosnian civilization.

In his will Gazi Husrev, governor of the Sarajevo of the time, left bequests for the construction and maintenance of public buildings. Some of those buildings survive (or have been rebuilt) in the "old town". There is a short video of the Gazi's life and contributions. Not a whole lot of stuff to look at but the building, itself, is harmonious and pleasing to the eye. Definitely worth the tiny admission charge. For a couple of Marks more one gets an admission ticket the the great mosque across the street.

It's from a visit here that I learnt a bit of the history of Gazi Husrez, the governor and a great builder and contributor to the old town, and society of Sarajevo. It's impressive to see how one person can do so much for a city. But the building itself is not that impressive.

This madrasah, a kind of Islamic school, is a small, graceful, 12-room educational facility. It has a beautiful portal with Arabic calligraphy and stalactite work. The central courtyard is also attractive, with simple stone columns and plenty of sunshine. The former classrooms contain modest but informative exhibits on the life of one of the city's greatest benefactors and boosters. It can be a little dry at times but it is well-presented and professional for a small museum.

The medresa, the school is nice. You don't need to pay for the courtyard, but visiting the inner court, with always changig exhibitions costs you around 1 EUR. The building is well preserved, you'll find a bookshop, caffe and the new library too.
