Latin Bridge is best-known as the place where the heir to the Austrian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his pregnant wife were assassinated on 28 June 1914 by a Bosnian Serb nationalist, Gavrilo Princip. So First world War started..Many people died.

Hubby is very interested in military history and this was on his list of must do things in Sarajevo. We found the bridge but couldn't find any plaque or information etc. We didn't enter the museum. Underwhelmed.

The Latin Bridge is a pedestrian and carriage bridge for vehicles. It is free to visit and cross. The date the original bridge was built is unknown, however, there is reference to the bridge in literature in 1541. The bridge was badly damaged in a...More

Learning about this in history class doesn’t compare to seeing it in person. Being able to say that you were in the same spot where WW1 started is surreal. This is an attraction that is completely free to the public to visit. Just across the...More

Was great to stand at the corner where WW1 effectively started and take in the impact of what subsequently happened. Very central and easy to find.

Latin bridge is a relatively small bridge in the center of Sarajevo reconstructed in 1798 during Ottoman rule. The bridge is special because of an attack in 1914 that took place here. The assassination of the heir to the Austrian and Hungarian thrones Franz-Ferdinand in...More

The bridge itself is of historical importance but the area around it really adds to the surreal and somewhat eerie feeling that is conveyed. The river and the surrounding old town is truly remarkable. The natural beauty mixed with the historical importance mixed with architectural...More

Although our guide told us the assassination took place just over the bridge, it is a good place to hear the details while gazing at the river. A definitely must do stop in Sarajevo.

Not the nicest bridge I have ever seen, but a historical place. This is where WWI started! On one side of the bridge, by the museum, you can see a sign showing where the assasinator of Franz Ferdinand stood while shooting.
