- macedonboyGlasgow, United Kingdom1,79,496 contributionsCovered Ottoman FountainThe Sebilj is an Ottoman era fountain in the centre of Baščaršija Square. The fountain was built by Mehmed Pasha Kukavica in 1753, although it was relocated to its present location in 1891. An unusual feature of the fountain is the wooden covering like a wooden screen in the Ottoman style. I was told that visitors who drink water from this fountain will return to Sarajevo someday. I’m not going to test that out.Visited May 2023Written 14 June 2023

This particular fountain is where hundreds of pigeons gather daily to be chased by children and observed by passersby. Fun and lively.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 June 2023
- SnowyShastaPortland, Oregon2,119 contributionsCenter of the Turkish old townThe fountain itself is interesting to look at, and looks Turkish on its own. It is also situated in the center of the square which is in the center of that part of Old Town. You should definitely visit the Turkish section of town and walk through the small and narrow streets when you are in Sarajevo. The fountain itself is not necessarily a must-see, but you will almost certainly see it while you're in this part of town. It still works, too, so feel free to fill your water bottle while you're there!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2023

It's like a meeting point or a marker in the city. Even though I was told those who drink from it returns to the country. Other than this it held no significance to me but to the locals it does. .Visited January 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 September 2023

This was a beautiful old fountain located in the heart of the Bascarsija (Old bazaar). As we were there in February, it was winter and had just had a massive snow fall and was covered in snow which gave it more character than usual. It also made the steps a little slippery. It was very popular with lots of people taking photos of it.
It reminded me of the old times of Trafalgar square when they had all the pigeons there. These are a pain and can make a mess so I was glad no one stirred them up to take flight when we went past. I also wouldn't drink the water with the amount of pigeon poop on and near the water fountain outlets.
Its still a must see when in Sarajevo.

This water fountain is possibly the central attraction of Sarajevo, the water is drinkable and the structure seems to be a meeting point for people of all ages.

It's an interesting square, a sort of Sarajevo's St Mark's, but same like in Venice - there are loads of flying rats, damned pigeons. I had to clean my coat afterwards, they just create a mess of the place, attracted by bird food people give them

This is a must-see site when visiting Sarajevo. It's probably the most photographed site in the city. It's neat to see it in both the day and evening. Definitely see this site when in the old part of the city!

Can’t miss this place, surrounded by pigeons which are friendly enough and will come and sit on your arm if you’re feeding them.
