Gazi Husrev-beg's mosque was built in first half of sixteenth century by Gazi Husrev-beg, Bosnian Governor (sandzakbeg) and grandson of Sultan Bajezit II. It is one of the most monumental mosques built in the Ottoman period and is the center of religious life of Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The mosque is the part of vaqf (foundation) established by Gazi Husrev beg, which is still the heart of the old town of Sarajevo. During the Siege of Sarajevo in Bosnian war the vaqf complex was fired by more than thousand grenades but, thanks to its solid structure and two meter thick walls, the mosque survived. After the war it was thoroughly repaired using the original ornaments found on the walls.

It is nice to see that such an old and big mosque in Europe is still in use for the muslims. The mosque is still beautiful and great as it was once. It gives you the peace to visit there, sit in the garden or just a pray inside of it.

Definetly worth seeing, it is impossible to miss it in the Old Town! Pay attention to the fountain in the yard and also they have a clock which shows the lunar time, so, according to the guide, you can see how long until sunset. It is pretty interesting. It is located outside of the Mosque but in their yard. :)

I poked my head in the gate to see if it were okay for me to enter the courtyard and a man welcomed me and even took me into the mosque during prayers so that I was able to experience it.

This place should be visited with a local guide that can give you insight into the history of this great historic monument serving as an active Mosque. Story of the founder, the great patron and benefactor of Sarajevo is an interesting one. Worth visiting inside. Pitty that old carpets were changed for a modern one; lost a bit of authenticity

Basically, this is the home-base of the Islamic faith in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Take the tour to see the inside if you have never been inside a mosque. Ask lots of questions! Take some photos.

The most important Islamic building in Bosnia and Herzegovina, built in 1531 as an endowment of Gazi Husrev-Bey, the governor of Bosnia. Gazi Husrev-Bey was the famous Bosnian sandžakbeg, a great military leader, builder and benefactor. At the site of governors from 1521 until 1541 the built a large number of other endowments around the mosque, and thus gave the... More
