Bascarsija
About
Bascarsija is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. Bascarsija was built in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isakovic founded the town. The word Bascarsija derives from the Turkish language. The word "bas" which is "bas" in Turkish literally means "head", in some contexts however also "primary", "main", "capital" and "carsija" which is "carsi" in Turkish means "bazaar" or "market". Due to the large fire in the 19th century, today Bascarsija is half the size that it once was. Bascarsija is located on the north bank of the river Miljacka, in the municipality of Stari Grad. On Bascarsija there are several important historic buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and sahat-kula. Today Bascarsija is the major tourist attraction of Sarajevo.

    Old Bazaar of Sarajevo.
This is the name given to the Bazaar in the old part of Sarajevo. This precinct sustained significant damage during the war of the 1990s, however, has been lovingly restored to its former glory. Lots of little stores and lots of eateries.

    Heart of Sarajevo's old town
This bazaar area is the very heart of the old town of Sarajevo. It has lots of shops and mosques, and the large square at the center is wonderful for people (and pigeon!) watching. It was fairly crowded and touristy when we visited, but it's still well worth seeing it and enjoying the streets and shops.

    A Special Place
Walking around Bascarsija is like visiting Istanbul. So cosmopolitan with mosques, churches and synagogues within close distance of each other. Beautiful architecture displaying the Ottoman and Austro-Hungrian occupation and influence. This is a very special place with cobbled winding lanes leading to coffee houses, restaurants, shops selling fresh lokum and antiques. It is quite easy to lose a few hours exploring.

People are very friendly, kind and amicable, the food is great, there are a lot of nice shops and places to discover. It would be a 5 star review if the streets are clean, there is trash everywhere and it makes you feel that everything is dirty..

Walking these streets in Sarajevo you be mistaken that you are walking streets in Instanbul Turkey but that is Ottoman influence that is still very evident here

Very nice place for a walk or shopping. There are many souvenir shops and eateries in this area. Walk along the small alleys of cobblestone streets, time will be frozen in front of you.

This area Sarajevo is super nice. I visited december into january and the Christmas decorations were still up and so beautiful. I love this shopping are in the heart if the city. Love love. It is vibrant, with lots of cafes, ships, restaurants stores and outdoor booths selling just about everything.

Day and night it is lively. I still can't believe Sarajevo nor anything I have seen and experienced in Bosnia. I will definitely love to return.
