Parking is a little hard where it’s in the middle of the town, but my family had a wonderful time at the museum! They just opened a new children’s area and it was amazing. They even have a sensory room that is well insulated, almost sound proof, for your little ones to decompress during their visit! It’s very affortable and if you’re in the area with free time, I would recommend checking it out!

What an intriguing museum/discovery center. Big on country music, dolls, WWII, and a slew of other things to see and experience! This is a MUST STOP off in the area - great for young and old! Handicap accessible, and you'll need about 1.5 hours. Enjoy!

My grandchildren, ages 5-7, really enjoy the museum. The children's area has hands on exhibits, play areas and special activities like crafts and storytime (check for dates and times). Upstairs is very educational for young and old with a replica of an old schoolroom, teepees, and wildlife exhibits. On the main floor, we always love to listen to the country music stories and play the musical quilt. The quilt is made of odd shaped wood pieces that make a variety of sounds when pressed. We were told that some remodeling is scheduled and many improvements will be evident. We visit several times a year and always enjoy ourselves.

I would give this 5 stars except it is somewhat small compared to large cities, but still a great attraction for the city. Frequently have traveling exhibits and always educational/entertaining stuff; be sure to visit the upstairs level. There is an elevator in the back for ADA. Also a frequent venue for charitable events--both large and small.
The have family memberships or you can buy a single day admission at the door.

This is a small museum that is good to take children to learn some history by visualizing. It is clean, well lit and not so crammed you can't walk around. WELL laid out.

We took our then 2 year old to see what this museum had to offer. They have some very interesting exhibits. My favorite was the music wall...check it out! In the basement they have a discovery center for kids with all kinds of things to play on or in. We had to pry my son away kicking and screaming when it was time to go. I'd High-landly recommend it. I apologize for the cheesy pun.

Friends live near Ashland and took us to the Discovery Center so our grandbaby could explore on a rainy afternoon. Unfortunately, they were remodeling, which is a good thing, but bathrooms were closed while we were there and the dust was incredible. We didn't receive a discount which I thought would have been nice considering the inconvenience but it wasn't a deal breaker.
There is lots to see and do in the basement for little ones! All kinds of different "scenes" are recreated from a McDonald's play restaurant, grocery store, flight simulator, real airplane on display, self-puppet show, slide, tunnels, on and on it goes. (see my pictures!) Our little one loved every minute of it even though she was covered in dust quite early on.
On the main floor are lots of displays about the big flood that hit the area many years ago. Very interesting since I wasn't from there. I didn't go upstairs but there was quite a bit to look at there too. There is a small gift shop as well.
For the price, it is reasonable and a great way to spend a rainy day.

Highlands Museum and Discovery Center is a surprise if you are looking for interesting articles of the past. Several unique displays provide many interesting looks at items and scenes from the earlier years of Eastern Kentucky and the Ashland area. Nice place to take the kids for a learning experience and a nice way to spend a couple of hours being educated on our history.

Great to get a membership this allows you to visit other museums around the U.S beside here. Rainy afternoon with kids keeps them entertained for some time. Kept nice and staff friendly.

The Highlands Museum and Discovery Center is located in the heart of downtown Ashland. As of this writing, they are promoting an exhibit featuring the contributions made by the people of northeastern Kentucky during World War Two. Uniforms, newspaper covers, and captured equipment from Germany and Japan are part of the display.
On permanent display is the Country Music Highway, showcasing the country music stars from eastern Kentucky. Local celebrities include the Judds and Billy Ray Cyrus are a major part of the display, and other displays include Crystal Gaye, Loretta Lynn, Tom T. Hall, and others who lived in communities along I-23, a major highway running the length of eastern Kentucky.
In the basement of the museum is the discovery center, with a variety of activities in which children can get involved.
The best time to visit the museum is in the morning, which makes it easier to find a parking place.
