If you are walking in Cuidad Viaja (the old city) in Montevideo you should take a walk from Plaza Independencia (the main plaza) down Calle Sarandi which is a pedestrian mall leading after a couple of blocks into Plaza Matriz. Sarandi usually has lots of...More

This is a small, slightly historic square. To my mind, Plaza Zabala is far more pleasant and Plaza Independencia is far more imposing. The actual name of this square is Plaza Constitucion. The nickname comes from the cathedral on the square--which dates from 1740, 16...More

Plaza Matriz has it all. A grand Cathedral. Shade trees. Statues. Fast food, pubs and street side restaurants. Pedestrian only streets. Souvenier shops and stands. Food carts. Buskers. What more could you ask for.

With the Cathedral on one side, this little square (on our map called Plaza Constitucion) provides shade and seating but for us it was interesting for its antiques and bric-a-brac market. All sorts of things were available for reasonable prices. Also plenty of regular type...More

Great little park. A lot of people doing a variety of things from skating to singing to whatever you can think. Clean, safe, places to sit down and relax. Solid area for a snack or if you brought a lunch.

Right in front of the Cathedral and filled with bustling locals anytime of the day. Great public market filled with antiques on weekends

After walking around Montevideo aimlessly for hours Plaza Matriz (Plaza Constitucion) was charming surprise. For the first time it was possible to find something to buy on many stalls selling "antiques". My husband couldn't resist buying a couple mathematics books more than 100 years old...More

This is a square in front of the cathedral in the heart of the old town. It's very leafy and a good place to sit down. We came here on Saturday on a recommendation that there was a big market but it was no bigger...More

This is a nice shady spot with lots of benches in the heart of the old city - a great spot to rest and do some people watching. On one side of the plaza is the old cathedral and there are cafes on another side....More

Other reviewers have delved into the substantial history of this plaza, so I'll focus on other things. It's small, only half a modern city block on any side, but there are numerous benches and it's very well-shaded, making it an ideal place to escape the...More
