Artwork of Uruguay's famous resident

Great examples of Torres Garcia artwork. Wonderful colors and gift shop is attached. He had a unique style and one of his most famous works was an upside down South America.

Joaquín Torres García is one of the greatest Uruguayan artists and a pillar of Constructivism. The museum has an ample collection that covers all periods of the artist's life and the diverse paths that his creativity explored. A few meters from Plaza Independencia, at the edge of the Ciudad Vieja.

Located on pedestrian street sarandi, near the Independence Square. It keeps in its collection the collection of the Uruguayan plastic artist Torres Garcia. It opens from Monday to Saturday from 10 to 18. There is also a small shop and art bookstore on the site.

Obviously it depends on your appreciation of Torres García's work but the size of the museum, the careful arrangement of the pictures the charts explaining the different artistic periods of the painter, the historic buidling... it all adds to a wonderful experience. This is a really enjoyable place, especially if you like the style of this master of contemporary art.... More

I went while in Montevideo for business. The museum has four floors and the entrance hall. The top two floors had an interesting local photography presentation. The two floors devoted to Torres Garcia showed the progression through different stages of work so there is not many of any type of painting but it is amazing to see the story of... More

Lovely small museum with 3 large galleries devoted to JTG. Only one had the famous constructivist paintings (saw more in BA) but still really nice. Bought a good wood toy which is a copy of his work. Surely worth a visit if you like 20th C art.

It is nice to visit and see the kind of paintings that the artist did. Since Uruguay is a small and quite young country there are note spectacular museums.

The hotel manager suggested this museum and so glad I stopped in. First off, the art is wonderful and varied. I would suggest taking the old time elevator to the 4th floor and then walking down the carved wooden staircase between floors. All the explanations are in Spanish, but the paintings speak for themselves. Cost 100 pesos to enter -... More

I was looking forward to the museum because Torres García is one of my favourite artists. I'm particularly fond of his semi-abstract cityscapes in red, blue, black and yellow, which are what I'm most familiar with. Sadly there are almost none of these in the museum, but it did show me what a versatile artist he was. I also wanted... More

If you enjoy 20th century art this is one of two museums to visit in Montevideo. Start here and then continue on to Museo Gurich (they are located close to one another, both on Sarandí) since Torres Garcia's influence is evident in the younger Zurich's work. I did not have any experience with Uruguayan artists before this trip and thoroughly... More
