This building sits right next to Plaza Indepencia and is worth taking a few minutes to appreciate. We did not go inside or tour the museum the building contains, but as we were walking and enjoying the old town and the plaza, we enjoyed marveling at this large building with its interesting architectural details. It is said that at one time it was the tallest building in Latin America - although that is no longer the case, it's still impressive and worth taking a few minutes to appreciate.

Amazing house to visit in this lovely part of the historic centre. A must see for everyone.
There is no charge to visit but do think there should be given the staff level in attendance and the maintenance of the building needed.

The tour is overpriced for what you get from it. The tango museum is a very small room w/music scores and old pictures.

Palacio Salvo houses the Museo del Tango. It was once Latin America's tallest building at 330 feet. However, right now it is just a very impressive looking structure on Indepdence Plaza.

Looking over Montevideo from our cruise ship, we couldn't miss the tall building topped by an assortment of domes and a sort of lens. Later, on a shore excursion through Cuidad Vieja (see my review, "See it on foot or by tour van"), there it was again!

Meet Palacio Salvo, which abuts the southeast end of Plaza Independencia (see my review, "Montevideo's dividing line").

Finished in 1928, Palacio Salvo was once Latin America's tallest building (330 ft. high if you include its antennas, removed in 2012). Palacio Salvo is a place of "onces." It was once a hotel, but ended up housing offices and private residences. It was once to have a lighthouse at the top, but ended up with those antennas instead. The site was once home to Confiteria La Giralda, a confectionary known for being where Gerardo Matos Rodriguez in 1917 wrote "La Cumparsita," probably the best known tango. Today, Palacio Salvo houses the Museo del Tango.

TIPS:

* You can tour Palacio Salvo. Make arrangements on its website or simply walk up. There's a viewpoint at the top of the building.

* Tourists can stay here; there are B&Bs available.

This was possibly the highlight of our city tour of Montevideo. This building is really impressive and we were told at one time it was one of the tallest in South America. Whether true or not you could spend quite a while studying the facade, which is really impressive. It is certainly the most imposing structure near Independence Square and well worth stopping at.

We didn’t know what to expect when we booked the apartment in the Palacio Salvo. When we arrived, we found a huge space for the four of us, including decent kitchen, bedroom, living room and bathroom. The views over the bay and city were superb, particularly as we were nearly at the top. The building itself was still being lived in as flats and apartments with varying degrees of renovation. Loads of quirky original features still existed though with the lifts, tiled floors and murals.
