    Wonderful heart of the city
We visited Independence Plaza while in port with a cruise line. This is the heart of the old town and where the presidential offices are located. By all means start your day here as a tourist. If you are cruising you can walk from here back to the port.

Central square in old town Montevideo
We were staying in Montevideo and enjoyed a walk through the old town, including this main square of Plaza Indepencia. It has many other sights nearby, so it's likely that you'll see it if you're in the old town area. We especially enjoyed seeing the old city wall / Puerta de la Ciudadela and also going down to the mausoleum underneath the status that dominates the center of the square. The Palacio Salvo building towers above it; we didn't enter the building but enjoyed seeing the exterior, as well as that of the nearby Theatre Solis. Overall a very nice central square and worth walking through as you explore the city.

    Wonderful place, very worth seeing.
Historic place, imposing buildings, museums and theatres nearby, safe to make walks around. The Centre of Montevideo has a lot to offer to the vacationer, the proximity between the sights help too to enjoy every minute in this wonderful place. Just a very important detail, do not think that the place is cheap, try to save, but do not get into the neutral of being making conversion between real and Uruguayan pesos all the time. I will give a tip of gold to save a little in relation to travel to distant cities like Cologne, Punta del'este and others. Go to the three-cross road terminal and catch a bus. The cost is very low and the trip is super quiet. The same I recommend to get to the airport, from the center of Montevideo to the airport the travel rates are: taxi ( 1400,00 pesos / R$215,00) Uber (870,00 pesos / R$133,00) and bus (500,00 pesos / R$77,00 two people, that is, the unit value will be R$38,50) Go by bus that is cheap and safe.

There is so much to see and visit in this area and the city centre in general. The main square, free museums, the main cathedral, solis theater, etc. great to walk around a good couple of hours.

A Few Tips About Montevideo's Indepence Square
In our walk around downtown Montevideo we came across the large Independence Square. In the middle of the square in the statue of General Jose Gervasio de Artigas who is considered to be the “Father of Uruguay.” There is a Mausoleum you can view of the General. Follow the stairs down. Viewing the guarded Mausoleum is free. On one side of the square is a reconstructed “Gateway of the Cidadel.” The gateway is quite impressive and used to be part of the city walls, now gone. The original Gateway was built in 1745 and torn down in 1829. Not far away is the Solis Theater. Tours can be arranged to see theater which was established in 1856. There are a number of government buildings—like the President’s office-- that surround the Square. Also, quite impressive is an apartment building with each room having its own air-conditioner. It makes for a good photo. If you found this review of any value, please press the icon “thumbs-up” to let me know

There are several sites that you can see from this plaza, such as a piece of the Old Town Gate and the statue of Jose Gervasio de Artigas, who is referred to as the father of Uruguay. An underground mausoleum was built under the statue. When we arrived, it was roped off and tours were not available. There is a very large building that is located around the perimeter of the Plaza with a dome top. I do not recall the name but on the first level that is open are a variety of sculptures there that should not be missed. We just happen to stumble across them when we were looking for a store to buy drinks/snacks.

Square with a lot of history, where the Salvo Palace, Estevez Palace, Executive Tower, Artigas Statue and Artigas Mausoleum are located. There is also the Solís Theater nearby. From the Square behind Artigas' horse there is the Old City and from the square in front the "New" City, following Avenida 18 de Julho.

Plaza Independencia came into being after the demolition of the fortifications of the colonial city, affirming independence. One city gate remains as a memorial and makes an atmospheric way to walk into the square. The square marks the transition from old to new town in history and in geography.
In 1923 a monument to General Jose Gervasio Artigas was inaugurated, which consists of a 17-meter bronze equestrian statue with a granite base. Then in 1974 an underground mausoleum was created under the square for the remains of Artigas.
The square is surrounded by cafes and government buildings. It is large and grand with park areas that were added in the early 20th Century. A space to sit and look around at the architecture.
The Netflix series, Conquest, was filmed here in 2019.

The original 1905 square at the site of the former Montevideo citadel, was a garden with flower beds and vegetation designed by Carlos Thays. However during the 1920s a enormous statue of Artigas was erected in the middle, ruining the scenic character of the place. The situation worsened when ugly highrise buildings (perhaps with exception of the Salvo tower) were erected around the square. During the military dictatorship in the 1970s the ashes of Artigas were placed in a subterreanian mausoleum structure near the colossal statue to underscore the 'true' nationalism of the junta.

I did not find the overall outcome positive. For me it is a rather gloomy place, especially after dark. No terraces, or performances of artists, but many homeless people, while other locals increase their pace to get away as soon as possible.

Montevideo's Independence Square is - sorry, dear friends - as dreary a sight as most of the city's other "tourist attractions": An extremely traditional statue that could stand in any country, surrounded by tall buildings of various degrees of ugliness. It almost looks like something from the former Soviet era.

If you're desperate to experience something interesting in Montevideo, visit the Mirador Panoramico on the 22nd floor with a breathtaking 365-degree view of the entire city. And of course, the wonderful Rambla, which runs for kilometers along the city's beautiful beaches and coastline. Both are, incidentally, completely free.

Plaza Independencia separates Cuidad Vieja, Montevideo's old town, from the new downtown.

There is much to see here.

On the western end, you'll find Gateway of the Citadel, an entrance gate which is all that remains of the city's old walls, torn down in 1829. In the center, there's the Artigas Mausoleum (see my review "More than a statue"). Abutting the southeastern side is the intriguing Palacio Salvo (see my review, "Skyline standout").

Just to the southwest is Solis Theatre, which opened in 1856 and in 1878 premiered Tomas Giribaldi's "La Parisina," considered the first Uruguayan national opera. At the eastern end, 18 de Julio Avenue starts. The city's most important avenue, it is named for the date of the first Uruguayan constitution.

TIPS:

* Don't miss the tall office building in the plaza's southwest corner. Have you ever seen so many window air conditioners?

TRAVEL MOMENT:

* Our enjoyment of Plaza Independencia was spoiled by scaffolding and crowd-control measures still up from the inauguration of the new Uruguayan president a few days before. What better reminder, though, of this area's importance!

We took a city tour round Montevideo and this was one of the places I was looking forward to seeing. Sadly it disappointed overall. Is there a city in South America that has more statues of men on horses or did we see them all in one day. Anyway it was busy with traffic, there seemed be an air of depression hanging around and other than the impressive Palacio Salvo I wouldn’t rate this Plaza as a top spot to see.

Plaza Independencia (Independence Plaza) separates Cuidad Vieja, Montevideo's old town, from the new town. We came here on a bus tour through our cruise ship for a 15 minute stop here and frankly I was not that impressed. Later I walked from the cruise port through the old town to this plaza and saw the plaza with new eyes. On the western end, you'll find Gateway of the Citadel, an entrance gate which is all that remains of the city's old walls, torn down in 1829. Walking through this gate from old town to new became an experience. I loved it.

The old city gate is an architectural and historic gem. Palacio Salva is a quirky building that can only be appreciated in person; pictures will never do it justice. Don't fail to add the Plaza Independencia to your itinerary.

The Palacio Salvo is impressive and tours can be taken which give some nice views of the whole plaza from above. Well kept and a pretty plaza but fairly quiet for a big city. Worth a visit.
