I visited her when touring the city. It is one of the old government buildings from both colonial times and the 19th century and now houses exhibitions. I saw two-one on emigration from Europe to the country and one on the British invasions early in the 19th century. Both interesting but you do need some knowledge of Spanish.

Worth to see if you are around. Comparing to other countries, Uruguay is a quite young country, so, historic places are not to much different from the middle of the century's architecture. But still nice to visit

We found this lovely place hidden by scafolding in a local guidebook. They called it the municipal historical museum. It had a delightful exhibition about the earliest history of montevideo, and exhibitions about the Graf Spey on the River Plate, political cartoons and photographs of Berlin. We were searching for a house that a relative was born in in the... More

The exterior is undergoing repairs and is completely covered. Inside, there are two rooms which contain historical archives, a display of mate straws and a small football exhibit. Located in Plaza Matriz, it's convenient to visit if you're already in the area, but not worth going out of your way to see. Hours: M-F 12-5:45pm, Sat 10am-4pm. Admission: Free.

First of all the photo shown of El Cabildo at the time Tripadvisor asks for this review, is incorrect. What is being shown is some modern building in the opposite corner of the square where the real El Cabildo is. The Cabildo is one of many historic heritage buildings in Montevideo, right in the center of the Old City (Matriz... More

El Cabildo is a historic colonial building, perfectly preserved. It's on a very beautiful plaza which is also flanked by the Cathedral and the Ministry of Labor building, which is what is depicted here.

I wouldn´t go out of my way to see the building, but if you are in the neighborhood of Plaza Matriz you may want to take a peek, in fact you can see it from the plaza. It holds some works of art, IMO of fairly minimal value. It was the old town hall, I´m told.
