This metropolitan cathedral is the main Roman Catholic Church of Montevideo and the seat of its Archdiocese. The church building dominates Plaza Matriz. Is is also known as Iglesia Matriz. In this cathedral, two historical events took place: the blessing of the Uruguayan flag and the swearing of the first constitution. It was proclaimed as National Historic Landmark in 1975.... More

The cathedral is located in the Ciudad Vieja neighborhood. I normally try to visit the cathedrals of the cities that I visit. This cathedral is not that different from other Catholic cathedrals. It has a nice sound system playing some church/monks music. You'll see some tombs, statues/monuments and paintings. Good place to take a break and/or pray. The Constitution Square... More

Even though we've been to some of the most decadent churches in Brazil we were still really impressed with this Cathedral.During our visit there were many people attending for prayers while tourists were very respectfully admiring this gorgeous building. The atmosphere is reverend and sombering and that's coming from non-religious people! We thought the acoustics would be amazing when all... More

The Cathedral is a must-visit when walking through the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town). It has a beautiful architecture and ornaments and it is a peaceful and quite place for pray or meditate in the city centre.

The cathedral is worth visiting more due to its cultural interest than to its architectural or decorative one.

I usually like visiting cathedrals. This one's just creepy given that my guide revealed that a former church official requested that he have his body cast in the statue erected in his memory (one on the left as you enter lying on an elevated funeral bed).

Very beautiful church. If you have time, please don't forget to visit this cathedral. We really enjoyed the place and it was an opportunity to pray.

Right off a really nice square it's worth taking some time out to pop inside here. It's really peaceful and uncommercialised as well as being beautiful. Cathedrals can all be a bit similar, but there's something about this one which avoids that. The interior is completely different to the more plain exterior and given there's no charge to visit it'd... More
