Having in mind that Peruvian seaside is a desert, “Pantanos de Villa” is a unique site with ponds and rare species of flora and fauna where you can identify, at least, ten different species of birds. The visit wouldn’t take more than two hours but, if you have more time available you can go to the wetland located at the shore and find more species.

It worths visiting the site every season of the year, since many birds are migratory they came from all over. Some of them came from distant places, as far as Canada.

I am not sure the casual tourist would find it excellent, but the place is very nice. We found parts of the refuge closed, including two of the towers, but one of the walks was under construction for improvements. What a great resource for the Lima area, a relatively calm place with great birds. The lagoon by the beach is best, with huge flocks of gulls, skimmers, pelicans and waders. The gull were mostly Franklin's Gulls, Which are only here in the northern winter, so numbers may be different in other months. We found a Roseate Spoonbill and a Chilean Flamingo there. The trail around the lagoon is not well marked, but we found our way along the inside of the fence by the beach.

This is irrefutably a good birding site near Lima and if you are a moderately keen birder likely well worth the journey - however.... when I visited (early November 2019) much of the property was closed - either due to the walkways being rebuilt, because the platforms are presumably unsafe, or just because a gate was locked with no explanation. There is very little value added in terms of information (it would be very cheap and easy to provide a photocopied map). The most rewarding part of the site is not near the entrance gate but rather a short drive away on the beach - but again there is very little information provided about where to go and what one might see. What I found particularly grating is that that as a foreigner you pay 50% more than a Peruvian, and my 15 year old son pays nearly 100% more as "student" discounts don't apply to foreigners. This "Gringo Tax" is common throughout Peru - you pay considerably more for internal flights for instance - and some may argue that this is fair, but I live in France and have never noticed that we charge people who do no live in France more for any services and would assume that there would be outrage if we did.

The tour of Los Pantano's de Villa is very interesting. You can see many birds and at this time of the year there are Franklin's gulls, which come from Canada and in March or April they return to their homeland

Pantanos de Villa is located beside the Pacific Ocean just south of Lima and consists of several lagoons and natural areas. There are some companies offering birding tours to the sanctuary, but it is possible to go there on your own. We hired a driver for $10 US per hour to drive us there and wait for us while we birded. There is a 15 Sol charge per person for entry into the sanctuary. It was well worth it. This sanctuary is in an area where it is probably not really feasible for a tourist to take public transportation. We did see lots of birds including: Black Vultures, Black Necked Stilts, Black Skimmers, American Oyster Catchers, Snowy Egrets, Whimbrels, Yellow Crowned Night Heron, Little Blue Heron, Great Grebes, Pied Billed Grebes, Neotropic Cormorants, Grey Hooded Gulls, Wilson's Phalaropes, Ruddy Turnstones, Cinnamon Teals, White Cheeked Pintails and several other types of birds. We spent about three hours there.

My wife and I love nature and we visited this place just outside Lima at the end of August. It is kind of desolate and although there were numerous birds, there were mostly cormorants, seagulls and one or 2 egrets. Spring or fall maybe better times to visit when there are migrant birds passing through. There are no facilities to speak of and no public transportation either.

Pantanos is a beautiful experience that allows you to escape the city and its traffic and discover wildlife and culture that surrounds it. Daybreak with the picnic, small row boat and walking amongst birds and turtles. Needless to add that by visiting pantanos de Villa you support those who are in constant fight to preserve diminishing nature in megapolis like Lima

This 180 hectare bird sanctuary by the pacific in the south of Lima is visited by around 150 species throughout the year. It has lagoons and read beds which the visitor can walk around or take a guided tour.
Early morning and evening are the best times for bird watching

We spent the afternoon at Pantanos de Villa yesterday and it was such a pleasant surprise! Who knew such a natural, quiet world existed in Lima? Visitors can walk or take a rowboat through the wetlands and there is a lovely beach at one end of the park. A must for birders visiting Lima!
