My wife and I took a taxi from the airport to the old Spanish fort (Fortaleza Real). The drive there was through dilapidated streets and the industrial area around the port. The tour of the fort and its history was fine. But the area immediately surrounding the fort is really sketchy. At 4pm on a Saturday, almost directly in front if the Callou Municipal Building, we were accosted by a man panhandling who showed us a gun in his waistband. We felt lucky he did nothing more. Listen to all the other reviews here about potential danger. Go with a trusted guide or, better yet, don't go at all.

Due to the troubles, we were unable to travel any further than the port, however, the market on the pier, was fun to have a browse in, and grab some arty souvenirs, and the mandatory T-shirt, at good prices, considering we were on a cruiseship.

The cruise terminal quayside offered a range of high quality souvenirs. From alpaca woollen throws, in all colours to super soft, toy llama. A good range of carefully crafted jewellery. Friendly vendors who did not crowd or hassle the shoppers. Great to support such local artisans while Lima and further afield remained off limits.

A get off and get on ship spot . Otherwise not likely to be in the area . Area isn’t a scenic drive , but a real world look into the working and normal day to day activities. Lots of repairs needed, theme viewed .

All the wall art was crumbling down and it is basically nothing more than 1 street. The traffic and the state of the houses beyond there streets are horrible. Some of the houses were even collapsed. Very poor neighbourhood. Our advice: skip it.

Ideally you want to plan your trip to this area. There are some roof terrace restaurants overlooking the sea and port, the street art, the Fort and a boat trip to the island. This will be an enjoyable day.
Everyone is warned to leave the area before dark.
There are areas of poverty outside of the cultural zone. But I think you can have a very nice day here.

It's a shame that both the port and airport are located in Callao because compared with most of the rest of Lima, Callao is an absolute disaster. Famous for its high levels of crime, this is not where you want tourists disembarking. The airport itself is safe, but driving out of Callao is a bad first experience. Tourists must NEVER walk the streets at night here. Just drive out as fast as you can. Don't let Callao taint your view of the rest of Lima.

There is not a cruise port terminal here. They do provide a shuttle from the cruise ship to the dock entry.

BOTTOM LINE: We left Callao to drive to the Lima Airport to fly to Cusco for a Machu Piccu excursion. The port was not very exciting. The Lima Airport is a busy place and expect delays and tight waiting areas. MY RATING: 5/10

Fantastic area, hidden gem within the Callao neighbourhood. Check out the “Monumental Callao” art house and its direct surrounding. You can easily spend half a day wandering here!
Great food and drinks options too

I Stayed in Callao for 2 nights. A very nice stay. But it was hard to get a cab from Lima centrum late friday night (around 11.30pm) - but UBER is to trust, they drowe me without any problem, and nice drivers.
Callao is wonderful with the walk by the sea. And all the birds from all over the world. I think its worth a visit half a day and then you can go up to Limas crazy puls.
