This area is the port that serves Lima. We were advised both by staff on our cruise ship and our tour guides that we should not walk through the area due to high crime rates, drugs, undesirables, etc. So we played safe and observed from the safety of our tour bus. Plenty of police and other security evident on the... More

Second time on a cruise stop in Lima, and cruise staff have been VERY negative about Callao, the port area for Lima) both times. Apparently it can be dangerous in some areas, but if you taxi in to the Fort of King Phillip or a waterfront area called La Puenta, where there are lovely small, elegant restaurants along the wayerfront.... Nicely refurbished, walking around La Punta in Callao is a must, plenty of excellent restaurants you can spend a whole day enjoying the view, the movement of fishing ships and the big one coming in and out from the port. Stop at don Miguel to enjoy a mango ceviche, unique in Lima and quiet an experiece for your taste.Safe to... More

This is the port city of Lima. A business and shipping area with tons of history. Go with someone who can tour you around and make sure you go to the fish market. Fantastic

The port is impressive. Not too far is the interesting fisherman's wharf where there are lots of sea life for sale. People repairing fishing nets, too. Nice beach. Lots of Pelicans.

This Area of Lima has become quite dangerous if you dont know where to go or get lost. What is beautiful about Callao is that still have those Colonial houses, wish make certain areas quite colorful and with its own caracter..But i wouldn´t go with out a good guide or a person from that area. Not need to put yourself in danger.

Callao is not a nice city, it is dirty, smelly, with traffic jams everywhere. Yes this is the way people are living in Lima and unless you visit a quarter like this you cannot really tell people you have been to Lima. There is a lot of small shops and stands on the streets selling everything - from cheap fresh... More

Please seperate reviews about the neighbourhood Callao and La Puna. Although La Punta is part of this neighbourhood, it's a complete different place altogether. Where La Punta is nice and tourist friendly, Callao is a poor area where you shouldn't stop. When Waze directed us through the backstreets of Callao when we were on our way to Real Felippe, even... Real Felipe is a very interesting place, it has a lot of information about the old Spanish harbor, military officer outfits and weapons. Also cells and some Army artillery vehicles used during the war with Ecuador.
