The Central Market is only about 5 blocks from the Plaza. It is a multi-story market of small local vendors.
You can see the vegetable section, replete with small vendors who have 6 or seven types of potatoes, peruvian corn, squashes, limes, yellow spicy peppers,(aji) ... You can see them husking the corn to use the leaves for tamales.
You can move to the grains and spices sections which rices, herbs, spices, nuts...
Upstairs are several poultry venders, with the fowl impaled on a hook in the neck. There are also vendors with 4 or 5 stools selling food.
Downstairs are the beef and pork sellers. You can see them deboning large joint on meat as well as the row of pigs head hanging at the front. There are rows of fish sellers as well as goats and cheese.
Upstairs you will find kitchen equipment, clothing and sundries.
It is worth the visit.

If you are like us, we think of markets in terms of the big and wonderful european food markets--incredible destinations in spectacular buildings/settings. In Lima, you need to "check that concept/thought at the door" and be prepared for something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
The markets are so much smaller and less formal. The structures are nothing special--not an architectural gem and fairly small. The vendors are more focused on the fruits and vegetables of the region--as well as the local seafood products. The displays in the stalls are more focused on selling products than on fancy eye catching displays. The whole market is less "formal" and very busy with customers actually buying goods instead of taking pictures. They have no tourist feel at all; however, they do put on a good show of the unusual (many of which we had never seen) products they have to offer. They are particularly proud of the 5,000 potatoes they grow in the country. We were able to taste a number of the fruits and vegetables--which was helpful when eating meals we had later on the tour. Actually, a number of them are really good!
All in all, this is an interesting experience. For some, the lack of "western sanitation" will be more than a bit disturbing, but you get used to it. Whatever you do, however, do not drink any of the water (other than from a bottle) offered to you ANYWHERE in Peru or Ecuador. I made the mistake of using hotel water from the tap when brushing my teeth upon arrival in country an paid a price for the error! Once I switched to bottled water (the hotels give you 2 complimentary bottles a day) and the intestinal problems went away after I took a course of medications.
Final note, just about everywhere you go, you will see "souvenirs" that are purported to be made by the locals. Be aware of the "made in China" knockoffs! If you see exactly the same "watercolor" painting (as well as many other trinkets) more than once, that's a real indicator of the situation!

I love the Mercado Central even more than I love Gamarra (see other review). You can find everything except a Mah Jong game which my cousin and I searched for 3 days. My greatest prize is buying 1 liter bottles of Negrita Peruvian Vanilla flavoring for about $1.50 each. I use it for cake decorating and my icing has the best taste ever. My friends are obsessed with it now, so I had to bring 4 liters back this time.
Watch your purse, don't wear lots of jewelry and just enjoy the rich tapestry of Peruvian every day life.

If you are coming from miraflores, like most turist do, you can take a cab for about 15soles or take a public bus for around 3 soles. If you chose to take a taxi be prepared that the ride may take you anywhere between a half an hour to an hour depending on the traffic. Do watch your valuables while you are in the taxi.. the market itself is pretty awesome. Lots of vendors and places to eat.outside they are selling clothes and domestic products. The ground floor is mainly meat and the upstairs is mainly produce, herbs and a bit of eveything. Also the china town is just around the corner. There is a meet shop there where you can try chinese roasted duck and other roasted meats. A quarter pound of roasted meat is around 8 to 12 soles. The central market is an amazing area.very colourful. I highly recommend it.

Fish, Poultry, Meats/Cheeses,Olives and fresh-made sauces all on offer! No access to a kitchen? Opt for the food stalls. Yoky's inside the market prepares fresh Peruvian fish, chicken and meat dishes perfectly and right in front of you! The plates are incredible and the prices are rock bottom!

Sadly nothing worth making the trip for. A sad comparison to El Mercado nearby. Lots of bland food, overpriced thimbles of water, and acres of empty tables with the american stacked together and no one else eating. Avoid this one

We decided to view the Central Market after returning from Cusco. When we advised the cab of our intent, he said it is dangerous. We were prepared, as we understood it to mean pickpockets could be present. When we arrived in proximity to the market, this is not a tourist site, it is a local market for the residents of the area. Although nothing out of the ordinary occured, one can sense that this area is not for tourism. It is in a tough neighborhood that has long since been forgotten. Venture here if you want, it is safe (during the day) but I doubt you will be impressed if you have ever seen other central markets.

I think this is the best mercado in Lima. It's huge, and it's clean. Different sections of the market have different vendors selling the same things grouped together. Overall it's worth a trip, I'll just warn you that downtown is a bit run-down.

This market is large and very interesting. The perfect view into the real Lima and definitely not a tourist destination. If you are adventurous and want to see the city’s commerce in action, hold onto your valuables and buckle in for a look under the hood.

This is the biggest and cleanest market in Miraflores, in the past not so clean but now a place to visit and to eat cheap!!! Compared with other places you get twice as much for half the price and it still is good!! I never got sick!!!
