Interesting and historical
Nov 2021
We arrived rather late in the day and they close at 5:30 so that may have been why we were put in (the last group tour?) spanish speaking tour. It did not seem like you are free to explore on your own but admission includes tour. There are english signs at each stop so we could follow the tour. Lots of catacombs at the end. Worth visiting when touring Centre (Plaza d"Armas).

Great piece of history
Sep 2021
We loved the history here. The building is beautiful and there is so much to see inside. There are bathrooms and a gift shop. It was not to busy and there was a mass going on as well. I recommend visiting.

What a lovely and beautiful place, with lots of history. Located at dowtown, this place was worth visiting, I was amazed by the amount of history that that place has. One of Lima's Top Attractions
Oct 2019
Beautiful church dating to 1600s, damaged in 1650 earthquake, and completed in 1672. Original colorful tiles from Sevilla, Spain decorate the cloisters and patio. Library is home to centuries old manuscripts and books. Spooky catacombs display 15,000 remains. Inside the dome is an elaborate wooden latticework in a Moorish pattern. Didn't get to see the main Chapel & the famous Last Supper serving roasted guinea pigs. Regrettably, no photos allowed inside.

Great activity in Lima
Mar 2020 • Couples
We visited during the start of march. The tour guide was fantastic, very informative and clear English. We really enjoyed both the beautiful decor of the church and exploring the catacombs.

Nice Church but Not the Best in Lima
Jan 2020
We visited this church on our walking tour of old Lima and thus were possibly not able to give it the attention that it deserves. For example, we were unable to tour the catacombs.
It really is quite beautiful inside and obviously well constructed, as it has survived numerous serious earthquakes. It is one of the most visited churches in South America, but I did not think it the most beautiful. However, it still a very beautiful church and worth a visit.

A good guided tour of a beautiful Old convent (with added mummies)
Mar 2020 • Family
You can only do a guided tour but it is worth the small admission price. Wonderfully preserved Franciscam convent with catacombs full of mummified old monks.

From an artistic perspective- astonishing.
Dec 2019
I may not be a church-goer, but as an art lover, I have to say this church is superb. If you're not a religious type, you'll still find the craftsmanship astonishing. Photography is discouraged- this is somebody's sacred place after all.

We visit a lot of churches--this is different & good, but far from the best we have ever seen
Feb 2020
Rating churches is tough! There are so many all over the world and they really are far more different than appears on the surface. This is not anywhere near the largest, most beautiful, most artistic, most complex from an engineering standpoint, or most historically important. However, it is one of the most visited in South America and it is notable in a number of different ways. When in Lima, it is one of the "top places" in the city; therefore, go and see it!

The structure is large and hulking as opposed to the graceful gothic cathedrals you have seen in europe, but it has a real presence to it. It really looks as if it "belongs" in this city! It is a very well built church that has withstood numerous serious earthquakes. The work in the front plaza is uncovering the old roads that existed when it was built--they are interesting and worth a look.

The inside is attractive and has a number of points of interest as well as some interesting artwork. The cathedral is attractive. The old dome is impressive. The catacombs are very different than any we have seen. The underground entrance is interesting. It is great to be able to walk through the catacombs and to see the incredible brick and stone arches that have held the structure together for centuries. The bones and burial areas are a little to "art directed" for my taste, but that is a minor point. The history (and stories) behind the catacombs is very interesting--with lots of politics and financial intrigue involved!

This was a very large complex that used to house many monks. Today, there are only a handful that are in residence, but you will not see any of them.
