I was expecting more from Antioquia, but if you happen to already be exploring Cieneguilla it may be worth a couple of hours to check it out. The town is tiny…I would say about 30-40 buildings are hand painted in quaint designs…so a few good spots for photo opportunities. However, the town's main feature is not the paintings but the numerous stray dogs and piles of dog poop which are literally everywhere. Quite typical sadly that the residents of this town who derive their living from tourists coming can't be bothered to even clean the place up. All of the restaurants serve food that could be described as average if you were in a charitable mood, with dozens of flies buzzing around the tables and (naturally) stray dogs wandering habitually into the restaurants that the wait staff will eventually chase away of you ask them. If you do not ask them they will do nothing of course. The drive up to the town past some verdant valleys, picturesque rocks, creaky wooden bridges and water rushing down from the mountains is much better than the town itself.

This tiny town has big intentions. It is mostly a destination for Limenos looking to get away for the weekend. The town is filled with colorful murals, and the people are warm and friendly. You can buy local products such as honey, fruits, and cremoladas. Spend the day beside the river with the family. Worth a visit.

We visited Antioquia in June of 2013 and it made for a wonderful little day trip out of Lima. It took us a good two hours to get there from the Pachacamac area but the roads were decent. The town was very well kept, clean and tidy with all of the buildings painted alike.... it was a breath of fresh air, literally, not only for the tidiness but for the clean mountain air.
We spent most of the day alongside of the river but did find time to have lunch at a restaurant along the river (I'm sorry that I can not remember the name.) The food was good but I felt it over priced for being so far from Lima. We also visited the jam factory that sat higher up overlooking the town. It wasn't much to see but we enjoyed it anyway and bought some membrillo/manzana products.
Overall, a nice place to get away and explore if you like nature. There wasn't much to do but we weren't looking for much, just relaxation which we found!

If you're looking to get away from it all in one day, leave early for Antioquía. 3 hours tops from Lima, this quaint little spot is perfect to get your batteries recharged and breathe some pure air next to your loved ones. The road is bumpy for like 20 minutes, after that it's quite good-no biggie for an experienced driver. Beautifully painted houses, friendly people and a must-eat: local trout! Don't miss it!

I was expecting a really touristic place, it is defitly not! The place is wonderful and the paintings on the houses are very different. I loved the bus journey to Antioquia: amazing view of the mountains and nice small villages to stop by!

The road is really very very bad. But the town has improved a lot. There is a viewpoint, hanging bridge, local museum, artisanal ice cream parlors, food with grilled shrimp, in chaufa, a soup that is a mixture of green broth and menestron, cobbled or cobbled streets, there are clean public bathrooms and simplicity and warmth. of the townspeople

Is it possible to buy tickets for Machu Picchu from antioquia. We a beginning a 16 day road trip around Peru, when we arrive here we will have a better idea of which day we can head to ollayantatambo. to get train to Aguas callientes. Then bus to Machu Picchu. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Do train and Machu need paperwork for tickets or would booking on line with phone confirmation be okay. Thanks Eileen n Nicky
