Small, well kept park in the center of Iquitos. This park is central to much of the tourist happenings. I was here on Mother's Day and the city held there event celebrating Mother's here. The park also comes to life at night starting around 9pm.

After reading a few comments on the main square I am disappointed to find out that everyone ignores the bizarre funny detail of its monument.
There is a plaque showing a freize in high relief displaying a battle between Chinese and Peruvians, battle which never took place in history. This is the result of a misunderstanding of an Italian sculptor who confused the word Chilean for Chinese. He made the plaque, the city inaugurated the monument and didn't realize the mistake for several years.
Peruvians who know the story never miss taking pictures of the most bizarre main square monument in Peru.

The loud noise making teenagers should be directed to nearby river. The plaza is good, apart from these noisy teenagers. The tourists should feel safe here.

Going to the Plaza de Armas was amazing during the day, and especially on Palm Sunday, but the night life was what I was really drawn to. Going at night seemed to create a completely different atmosphere. There were people out selling food, trinkets, toys, and many other things. There were street performers playing guitar, people eating fire, and just people genuinely enjoying the culture of Peru.

We spent the night in Iquitos prior to going to the Amazon. Plaza de Armas is small but a great place to watch the locals and the small motorcycle type vehicles. There are a few decent restaurants that ring the plaza.

During the day, there aren't many people on the plaza. However, at night, families come out and there are local vendors selling everything from food to small toys for children. We saw musicians and families enjoying the fresh evening air. There are tons of toursit police, so you always feel safe. Strolling the plaza is a perfect evening activity as it's close to the boardwalk for a nice romantic view of the sunset over the river!

The Plaza is immaculate, well cared for. Every evening the locals come out to enjoy the plaza, the fountain and the street vendors. Compared to other areas of Iquitos this is a beautiful square surrounded by colonial buildings and the Doubletree hotel. It’s just a block away from the Amazon River

This is the cultural center of Iquitos. Many people come here to pass the time and also gather for social activities. One night it was super crowded as Peru was playing in the soccer world cup game so there was a sea of red and white shirts everywhere. It was awesome to see the country support.

Not the nicest plaza ever but quite central and close to Malecon. Around the plaza you can find the cathedral which seems the highest building of Iquitos and the casa de fierro, designed by Gustave Eiffel. Tourist information is around the corner on the right on the way to the Malecon. For those who like to travel further by ferry to the three borders (Santa Rosa, Leticia & Tabatinga) the ticket office of the ferry company is based 2blocks to the north from the north eastern corner of the plaza de armas. Mototaxi from the plaza to the harbours where cargo boats leave cost us 4soles one way.

I didn't see any high end jewelry in Iquitos. However your best bet is probably along and under the Malecon, which is the walkway/plaza that runs along the river.
