Jaw dropping architecture. We freely walked around inside the church before the tour. It is just stunning, the immense detail and sheer size is amazing. They were holding mass as we arrived and did not mind at all us walking around, partly bc its so big. The tour then gives you access to the adjascent rooms and corridors. The catacombs were cool too, note that it is very musty down there and with bones of literally thousands of people.

I only went in here by accident, thinking it was just a small church. In fact it's a museum and catacombs. S15 to get in, which includes an English-speaking guide. It's two stories with cloisters, choir, library, refectotu, chapels and a huge beautiful church. Only 3 brothers left - it once housed 180. Rebuilt/ restored after 1650 & 1950 earthquakes, but there is a LOT of original carvings & religious artwork, chests, manuscripts/ books. It also boasts one of the (allegedly) biggest paintings in South America. The church is decorated (relatively) simply but is huge & very impressive. A real find.

We paid 15 soles to enter the museum and it was very worth it! It includes a guide that takes you through everything and explains the history behind it. Our guide was amazing, one of the best we ever had. The catacombs are small but very interesting tales about it. The choir was one of our favorite places to see. Also the biggest painting in Latin America!

Lots of large scale oil on canvas paintings including the largest paining in the Latin America are kept in a good condition. Library with about 15,000 old books was impressive. The choir room was amazing. We were able to see only one catacombs, the basement one was under improvement. The entrance fee for the museum is now 15 soles and the bell tower is extra 5.

This should be near the top of things to do in Cusco. Recently opened, this church-turned-museum offers really interesting tours in English and Spanish for a pittance. It features a large amount of artwork depicting the life of San Francisco, including the largest painting in Latin America (and the third largest in the world)! Interesting catacombs as well. Highly recommend!

I had a very good tour with a young girl practicing her English. The tour was very interesting and informative and I learnt of the history of the convent, the artworks and the catecombs. Well worth a visit.

This was one of the best musemus in Cusco, and sadly not included in the general tourist ticket that provides access to 16 sites. With some impressive catacombs and human remains, the true gems are the hundreds of paintings that are not as preserved as they could, since the museum has no government support. Guided visit is included in the admission cost, so it is definitely worthwhile. A must see for all tourists, before all its incredible art dissapears or is further damaged!

Among the five cathedrals & churches I visited in Cusco, this was the "only one" with human remains to see in the catacombs down below (about 4 of them which are kind of spread out in various parts of the Cathedral), and here the remains are "seen naturally" without glass covers (unlike those at San Francisco in Lima although not as plentiful of them here as at that cathedral). And just as great as the underground, there's the part "up above" which is the tower & the adjacent part of the roof from which the view is just "a breathtaking one" with the red rooftops stretching from the vicinity of this cathedral all the way to the mountains surrounding the city. Also, quite awesome along a stairway is a "huge tapestry" (the scene of which I can't recall since no "indoor photos" are allowed here) which according to my guide is like one of the three largest tapestries (seen in a cathedral) in the world.
At a close vicinity (within about a 5-minute walk) of the "main square" Plaza de Armas, the best way is along the street from the southwest corner of the Square (the corner near Church of Compania de Jesus) until you see the "small gate" where this cathedral is just shortly to the right of that gate without having to go through it (but which you can do so later to get to San Pedro Market at about another 5 minutes from the gate).
And yes, "special thanks" are to my guide, a nice lady named Umpiro, for the great tour (especially for the catacombs & the tower/rooftop which are the parts of the Cathedral you can only go with a guide).

They don't tell you there are only two small staged rooms open to the public that they call their catacombs. All the rooms below the church are closed. Now there is some interesting art work and ornately carve choir chairs but I have visited many finer cathedrals around the world, Others in our group thought the two main churches in the main square were more ornately decorated inside. The tour did give an impressive historical background on the Saint San Francisco de Asis and there is some old and impressive art work depicting his life and death.

Can you get the guide at the cathedral or did you hire a guide ahead of time as part of a tour?

As I recall, the entrance fee is quite inexpensive, and a guide comes with it. The guide will take you around public parts of the convent and into the catacombs.
