About
The Museum of Pre-Columbian Art - MAP Cusco is an experience that allows you to discover the mystical art of ancient Peru. It houses and exhibits admirable objects for its history and aesthetics, created by women and men of the Andes, more than three thousand years ago until the sixteenth century, in the territory where Peru is located nowadays. The 400 pieces exhibited in the MAP Cusco, located in the historic Casona Cabrera, a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas, are part of the collection of the Larco Museum, considered one of the best 20 museums in the world. The MAP Cusco, managed by the BBVA Foundation, offers the possibility of exploring its ten rooms with audio guides in three languages: Spanish, English and French. The narratives will bring the visitor closer to the worldview that defined the beliefs of the ancient Peruvians. The visitor can also enjoy MAP Café tasting the incomparable flavor of Peruvian cuisine in a magical and peaceful setting.

- BestRegards FromFarCape Town Central, South Africa670 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit!!Peru is so much more than the Inca’s! This lovely museum showcases wonderful art made by the Incas but also by pre-Inca civilizations. Explanations are well done, in Spanish, English and French. Definitely worth a visit!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2023

We wandered in randomly, with no expectations, and were touched by the finesse, elegance and spirit of the place. - WestCoastRestlessCentral Oregon, Oregon260 contributionsBeautiful little museumThis is a lovely museum that provides historical and religious context for the artwork displayed. It shares the last 3000 years of art styles of pre-Columbian peoples and cultures up to the Imcas. The pieces are beautiful and you can the distinct art forms of each culture. It's a little heartbreaking that the art timeline 'ended' in 1532, when the Spanish arrived.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 December 2023
- Laura M7 contributionsFor sure stop here! This is a great, comprehensive museum of Andean cultures. It is housed in a building that the Incas to re-educate the children of conquered nations. Then the Spanish used it to re-educate orphaned Inca children in a convent school. You learn about each of the 3,000 years of cultures, the artistry, and symbols in the Andes. There are audio and written guides in multiple languages. Our 9 and 10 year old kids loved it, too. I should also mention it's not part of the tourist pass-set of museums. So, unlike the Regional Historical Museum of Cusco, you can visit this without having to buy an expensive pass. You can, of course, spring for the museum and restaurant tickets.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 December 2023
- Wenrui YSan Diego, California109 contributionsGood collection but could be better presentedThe museum has art pieces from different periods of Peru and a lot of the collection are stunning. Most of the descriptions are quite detailed but some are repetitive and didn’t offer a lot of new information. In the gold room, there’s a small section of the wall where the light went out. Wish they actually fixed it. Also during the visit, there is some preparation for an event where workers were setting up metal framework to cover the courtyard, which closed off access to one of the first floor room and prevented people from going on the hallway on most of second floor.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 April 2024

You'll learn about mythology, religious ceremonies and costumes of the native people of Peru, and not only the Inka! Very educative, and gives a good overview of everything you're going to see during your stay in Cusco, from the symbles on the jewelery in the market to the archeologicalbsotes you're hopefully about to visit. If there is one museum you'll be visiting while staying in Cusco and exploring it, let it be this one.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 4 May 2024
- DeGrandUniOakland, California87 contributionsLovely Curation of Artifacts!I was thoroughly impressed by the collection the museum held of artifacts. I loved how the museum was curated as you venture through materials (wood, stone, metal) and through the various cultures that isn't just Inca. I loved seeing how different visually the styles were depending on the culture. The museum has a video intro at the beginning to give you a bit of history before you venture into the galleries. I would definitely recommend checking out the museum if you have an hour or two to spare in town.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 June 2024

I like art in intimate spaces. It allows me to take it all in, not rush or feel overwhelmed. This museum is in a lovely building so that was a good start already. But what really took me in was the art - it was presented with care, as it should be, since this is art from centuries and millennia ago and beautiful on multiple levels. The video introduction was especially helpful in pulling it all together for me - that this is one of the cradles of civilization and here are expressive artifacts to prove it!

Even if you saw Larco in Lima, this museum is also worth visiting. It is in an old mansion in downtown Cusco. The visit starts with an interesting intro video. All in all it doesn't need more than 1-2 hours but still a nice experience!

A neat little museum to give you the background of much of the local history through its art. Just the right number of exhibits and rooms in a well kept building. There on a Sunday when the restaurant and shop were not open

Small museum but was interesting. It was inexpensive and we spent about 1.5 hours. You start with a short video with english subtitles. We watched then walked around all of the placards were in english as well as spanish. It was a quiet spot and nice way to spend some time.
