Situated in a fairly remote location this site is well worth a visit, particularly with a guide. Very different from the usual trips to see Inca ruins so it made a pleasant change. There are toilets on site and few stalls selling tourist merchandise but not much else so an hour is sufficient time to spend on a visit

What an unusual site to see near the Sacred Valley of Peru. Out of a mountain is flowing a small stream that has a high content of salt. The water flows into sequered "pools" which are mined by letting evaporation take place. Really a must in my opinion as I have never seen anything like this before

We stopped here on the way back from Machu Picchu and were so impressed by the scale of the site but the simplicity of the salt collecting. Its been done this way for thousands of years and is fascinating to watch. Definitely worth the stop!

If you're looking for excitement, you're not likely to find it here. However, if you're interests lean toward historic, eco-friendly, resource extraction, you'll probably enjoy visiting Salinas de Maras. Water carrying dissolved salts flow down from the mountains to this location. Terraced ponds were created on the steep hills in Inca times. as the water flows down, it is diverted... More

After visiting many historical sites, it was a nice change to see something else. We joined a tour and in order to get here, we drove through farm fields and were literally on the edge of the cliff. The salt fields can be difficult to walk across as the paths are narrow and slippery but the site was quite amazing.... More

Must see. Beautiful drive/side trip if going to Ollantaytambo. For the history, for the salt, for the experience.

I didn't enjoy a lot of the salinas de maras, mostly because the weather wasn't great that day and the road to get there (the final part) was a bit scary. It is a one lane road, with a cliff on the side that is used by buses going in and out of the Salinas de maras. Although the view... More
