It was not in our plans to to to the Salinas de Maras, but we went as part of a trip to Morai. What a surprise! It was great to get the explanation from our guide about how an aquifer that runs through a saline mountain has been spewing saline water for hundreds of years. More interestingly, ancient cultures utilized... More

You may wonder why you'd travel to see salt flats but this site is awe inspiring. Families maintain and harvest these flats to this day. Don't overlook this!

The site itself was very interesting, but the road going down was bumpy, narrow and scary. A quick touristy stop at best.

Las Salinas are such an impressive sight. Well worth a visit. We arrived by car. Not sure if there are bus services here. We spent some time taking in the scene. Stalls sell small bags of Maras salt. We stocked up for ourselves and for gifts, whoch where well received. Reasonable price too. Dare I say that small sights like... More

A very scenic tour through the Sacred Valley brought us to the fascinating salt mines. Even though April is the rainy season and the workers weren't there, it was well worth the trip.

Salinas de Maras is that type of place that you doubt exists, but it does! Interesting to imagine that it is running and producing salt for more than six centuries. Worth the trip and the butterflies in your stomach way down the hill!

I read a lot about Sacred Valley. The idea of terrace farming, building houses and structure with big stones, and salt extraction in Maras. I am impressed by the ingenuity of Incas. Salinas is another place where you would appreciate the wisdom of the lost civilization - Incas. This site is huge with many small poligonal fields to extract salt... More

Pass by this place when you are o your way back to Cusco when passing through Chinchero Area. Salinas de Maras is a beutiful place almost enigmatic. Try to visit during dry season and you will be treated to a white backdrop of salt ponds. You can also do a bit of shopping in the the area and bring home... More

Went here and took around half and hour to see it. There are vendors selling salt products and other souvenirs. You can walk to the salt area too.

Wonderful short day trip from Cusco - these salt mines are a must see if you are going to the Sacred Valley. Gentle climbing, great vistas and good shopping for local stuff - including salt and chocolate. You will like this.
