It is a pity that this huge architectural complex has become a commercial hub, with stores, restaurants and coffee shops. If not, it could be as important as Santa Catalina Monastery but unfortunately, the two impressive cloisters or patios are just full of shops. The first cloister is particularly important, with all its square columns carved. Do Jesuits need to sell their space and sacrifice the beauty of the architecture? Very sad to see what it became, only the church being left as a patrimonial site.

Built in 1573, La Compania was destroyed by the earthquake of 1584, but rebuilt by the Jesuits in 1698. It's best features are its beautiful facade, and inside you will find that it is the most beautiful of all the churches in Arequipa. Gorgeous carvings, beautiful statues and paintings, it is well worth a visit. It is located kitty-corner to Plaza de Armas, so it is easy to find, you can't miss it.
What is really amazing about this church is that the entire inside was once painted mosaics - you can still see remnants of them. It must have been like looking in a kaleidoscope. There is a chapel that there is a small entrance fee to that is still preserved in this fashion, quite amazing to think the whole church interior was once like that.
The cloisters are harder to find - you have to walk down the street for several doors and then turn into them - just keep looking into the doorways. Once inside, you find a peaceful oasis in the bustling city center, with a couple of cafes, lots of Alpaca stores, and a few other shops. It's a nice place to visit, maybe hit the Cafe y Vino on the second floor for a peaceful glass of wine with a view of the historic cloisters and the church beyond.
Take the time to go inside this church, and to spend an hour or two soaking up the cloisters, it's quite charming.

Went here as part of the City Tour. There's delicious ice cream place by the entrance which from I heard is a must try in Arequipa. This place is somewhat quiet which can nice if you want a break from a busy town.

When I was there there was a wedding ceremony! The decoration of church was beautiful too. It is located around plaza de armas so it should be easy to find.

Beautiful!
It's surrounding Plaza de Armas.
I've got there by the end of a mass.
I could feel the energy.

A 20 minute stop at this church and cloister are worth a short detour. You will find the architecture pleasing and there are coffee shops and picanterias to fill you up nearby.

The internal patio and the catedral are a good example of the Spanish Barroc.

Firstly, the elaborate carved facade of this Jesuit church is a masterpiece of the churriguresque style started in Spain in the 1660s and features all sorts of motifs-take a close look. The church itself is a wonderful example of Mestiza (mixed) architecture , built of stone and wood.
Inside, the detailed altar and the altarpieces or retablos are all covered in gold leaf. There are several chapels.
Next door to the left of the altar is the incredible Capilla San Ignacio with its polychrome cupola and stunning murals of tropical flowers, fruit and birds from the Amazon area along with warriors and angels. Very impressive!
