Thought I'd pop in here thinking it would be just another church, well no it was so good to be taken around by a young guide whom did not speak english but we managed by sign and I was mesmerised. So much more to it than I thought and so very interesting. Saw the cell room of Mexican Friar Jose Mojica, who turned a priest after his music and acting career. Lots of paraphernalia of his past life in his cell. Beautiful cloisters with statue of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of all the animals. Definitely worth visiting.

Great monastery, although not as impressive as Santa Catalina. It could be, but this is a place where four priests still live, so about half of the architectural complex is not visited, including the library, an old building which has not been restored. The main patio is nice, with statues of animals and of course San Francisco in the center. What I enjoyed most was the room where Mexican father José de Guadalupe Mojica lived. He was a film actor and tenor before becoming a religious man and spending several years in Arequipa and other cities in South America. The roof of the church and the bell tower have good views over the city, and the square outside is a pleasant place to sit and relax. There is a good gallery with religious paintings and the church has an old organ, unfortunately not in working condition.

Located in the Old Town of Arequipa. it's about a ten minute stroll ,roughly northwards, from the Cathedral. Another beautiful historical building with a plaza in front of the church.

Another must see for lovers of architecture and history and of course the Christian faith.

Highly Recommended!

i passed through here again today (3 Sept 2019) on my way home. This plaza and church is related to the Juanita (ice Maiden) story. Also the Plaza has a unique archaeological museum explaining Arequipa's ancient and 1800-1900's history.

This is at one end of the historical centre of Arequippa. Although only about 15 mins walk from the main square far fewer people visit this. That is why we found it more pleasant. There is nothing unique about it but more locals seem to relax here especially local students. So you felt you were seeing a bit more of the "real town". We enjoyed sitting and relaxing and watching people. Very quick visit to the church, but shouldn't have bothered.

San Francisco Church is another typical south American church. It is about 15 min walking from Plaza De Armas .This complex was built in 16th century. Many Catholic ornaments and colonial paintings are still here.
