Fascinating. I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed this museum today. I'd like to return tomorrow to learn even more from interviews with about 20 different indigenous people and how deforrestation and exploitation of land minerals by the white man has made their way of life so much more difficult. A real jewel in Cuenca, EC. Don't miss it! Expositions vary. If nearby check it out and see what's new. Eating nearby at San Sebas is delicious, too. It is all on a beautiful plaza called "Parque de San Sebastian."

The Museum of Modern Art (formerly known as the Temperance House and built in the 17th century) used to serve as a detention center for mental patients, alcoholics, as well as a jail.

The building and its history was as interesting as the exhibit. Staff was lovely. Place was hard to find via tourist map (Google it!).
I enjoyed the exhibit perhaps more than my husband, but then I'm an artist and never miss an opportunity to visit Art Museums. He enjoyed his time on a bench in the sun reading while I finished taking it all in and savoring the single artist exhibit.
Spent about an hour there.

The building is very nice and it has a long history. House has been used as shelter and cure of people who had alcohol problems. Then it has been male municipal prison then elderly home and after that a place where low income mothers got help and now a museum. There were paintings of few Ecuadorian artists.

This is a small museum, but quite nice. It has courtyards with rooms off of them to view art. They also have a small sculpture garden. The staff at the entrance was very helpful to me about places to view local artisans. One of their installations was Enrique Davilacobos, enjoyed his work.

The museum is quite interesting. It took us a while to find the current exhibit, but once we did, found it to be worth a look.

Art and sculpture tastefully displayed in rooms/cells of old building with several small courtyards. Displays works of Ecuadorian masters. Building was built as treatment center for individuals struggling with alcoholism and later served as a men’s prison

Cuenca’s Municipal Museum of Modern Art (MMAM) is located on the quiet and enjoyable Plaza San Sebastián and is a great spot to explore.

The museum hosts temporary exhibits which are deployed throughout the stark and quiet monastery-like site that was originally designed as a house of temperance.

I enjoy modern art museums because it is always interesting to see how current artists channel and interpret their country’s history and broader culture.

Our visit to the museum turned into a longer stay because we found the Plaza San Sebastian to be so delightful and relaxing. There is a grand old church, a beautiful fountain, mature landscaping, and excellent restaurants and cafés.

While MMAM may not be a “top attraction,” thecombined experience of visiting the museum and surrounding plaza is worthwhile if you have more than a couple of days in town and need a break from the busier sections of the city.

Admission is free.
