Huge plaza with best view of the cathedral roof including Cuenca city name! Finally I found some Cuenca souvenirs here.

beautiful square in the heart of the city. From here it is best to start exploring this beautiful city.

This rectangular square has recently been upgraded. The stalls with merchandise of interest to tourists are orderly grouped. Some spaces show archeological remnants. After 8PM there is little activity anymore, but the place including San Francisco church is well illuminated. I felt safe.

It’s big but uninspiring. A bunch of vendors selling chintzy souvenirs just did not appeal to us. The main square one block over is way better and more lively. Have your picture taken in front of the big red letters spelling Cuenca and move on.

The "old" SF Plaza was a dump that you stayed away from. The "new" SF Plaza is clean and open... but largely wasted space. Sitting pits in the center of the plaza just break it up and make it hard to roam. Fountain is not particularly nice, and is usually off anyway (this city is not warm enough for a kids-play fountain anyway).

The plan had been for an underground parking space, which would have relieved parking problems, but it never materialized. The vendors are relegated to leaky small trailers.

After 50 years of fighting for a new design, the city sure blew an opportunity to make this a special place in Centro... :(

Plaza San Francisco seemed to have lost its charm after the remodeling and purposing for cultural events. We feel badly for the displaced vendors who have sold their goods for many generations.

That being said, we decided to go back a few days later. We were looking for textiles to take back to the states. Our first stop was a tiny shop, and when we asked for blankets, we were taken behind the shop to a literal warehouse of blankets, sweaters,
tablecloths, backpacks and many other items!

The staff were very patient with our beginner level Spanish and we spent a lot of time finding everything we wanted.

Please if you visit, make sure to go to CEMUART in the back of the plaza. It is a 2 story Artisans mall with locally crafted jewelry, ceramics, toquilla hats and art.
