Would not stay here again. Went to a restaurant for dinner a 5 minute walk away and all the locals told us not to walk because it’s sketchy when it’s a weekday and it’s dark.

At first I thought they were being dramatic but we took a car and they definitely weren’t joking. Even our waiter told us it’s a bad place and we needed to take a car back. When we did, our driver asked us more or less, “why the hell are you in this part of town?”

Don’t stay here! Maybe it used to be nice but it’s not anymore. And it’s far from the historical district anyway.

We definitely enjoyed wondering around the district, as it had plenty of cool little shops, restaurants, cafés, and cool architecture!

We chose to stay in this neighborhood, but, in hindsight, should have stayed in the historical district instead. After dark, there too many sketchy people hanging around, and even our hotel manager said to taxi from a restaurant two blocks away after 7:00 PM. That’s not a comforting thought. The area has lots of restaurants and a younger crowd hanging out, with several nice hotels, but it’s just too littered and graffitied and questionable after dark to make this a desirable destination. Choose a Old Town instead.

Mariscal in central Quito is roughly between the historic district and the more wealthy areas in the north. Highways with lots of motorized traffic crisscross or border the neighborhood causing a lot of pollution. Even buses are not required to use a filter, their black smoke is exhausted unhindered into the streets. There are few historic buildings in the neighborhood. Most structures are newish and architecturally not interesting.

Mariscal is marketed as a tourist area. Its major attraction are restaurants, cafés, bars, disco's, travel agents, shops, bank facilities and hotels. The highest concentration is around Plaza Foch. Locals with money to spend go out here, especially during the weekend.

Avenida Amazonas is most lively during the day. After 8PM most shops are closed. After 9PM there are few people around with the exception of a few street prostitutes and some homeless people. Police presence is minimal.

must be 150 bars, restaurants and discos in a three block radius and the noise continues into the early morning

I noticed a LOT more graffiti in the Mariscal neighborhood compared to when I was there a couple of years ago. Nevertheless, it's not a bad area, but appears to be going through some changes. I noticed more empty buildings, which I hope is temporary. There is a nice contrast in what is obviously a tourist area and only a few blocks away, which houses businesses more commonly used by locals. I have never felt unsafe in this area, but have not walked around there alone at night, either. I felt fine walking around alone in the daylight hours. I admit to seeing some "colorful" individuals there at night, but none of them were doing anyone any harm.

We stayed in a hotel in this area because I read that this was one of the safer areas. Well it didn't feel that way. We visited around 4 PM and it just didn't feel right. There were police cars everywhere but still...

We also tried to get money from an ATM with our VISA card which did not work. We tried several different ones but no luck.

We asked the front desk of our hotel and they directed us to a larger bank with ATM's and luckily we got money overthere.

Interesting little area. There are a good amount of bars, restaurants and places to check out for a little shopping. At night it CAN get a bit dodgy especially into the late-late night. So the later the night, the more the demographic changes.

We walked through the Mariscal District of Quito in the afternoon, so we cannot comment on the nightlife there, which I understand is pretty vibrant. There were some colorful buildings and murals, and the neighborhood is photogenic. Our last stop in the area was the crafts fair at the southern end, which was a lot of fun. We bought many souvenirs--you can see my separate review of the fair.

This is a popular tourist area in Quito but not the nicest area. If you are young and want to bar hop fine but if you have a family or are older I would stay away. The Quito bus tour goes through this area if you want to check it out.
