Of the 6 churches we visited today, the Basilica del Voto Nacional is my favorite. I love the gothic style, which is different then all the other baroque style churches in Quito. What was delightful was the gargoyles. Instead of the usual monsters, they had all different indigenous animals of Ecuador and the Galapalous. This is the highest building in... More

This church looks very old but the building was only completed in 1909 and consecrated in 1988. There is a lift to the top of the church under the twin towers to an exhibition and a gift shop. From there you can walk under the roof to the single tower and up several steep stairs and ladders into that tower.... More

An amazing piece of historical architecture. The climb up the steeple is demanding but well worth the effort, when you get to the very top there is a tremendous view across the whole of Quito.

Although we did not have much time to spend at this church, I am very impressed by this building. After being in Europe several times and visited churches in places such as Paris, Rome, Florence, etc., I did not expect to be impressed by a church in Quito, but, I was wrong. This church is quite impressive in terms of... More

This is one of the few churches that allows photography inside (except in the chapel in the rear) so we decided to visit. We previously visited in 2014 and at that time, entry was free. This time it was $2 each - a small price to pay to see this wonderful example of classic architecture. Capturing properly exposed images without... More

Amazing building both inside and out. The trip up into the clock towers is taken by elevator and from there you can walk across a wooden walkway within the roof to climb the steeple, but you need a head for heights as the ladders are both steep and open. You can also walk up the spiral staircase into the top of... More

The basilica can compare to any of the European cathedrals of the style with beautiful stain glass windows. It is well worth the climb to the tower for beautiful views.
