Well, 1535. Here are spectacular churches full of gold - there is 'a street with seven crosses' - a sixteenth century Franciscan Monastery, and the impressive but intimate 'Independence Square' with its obelisk monument to the 1809 Revolution. Here are shoe-shine boys and street traders, bustling traffic, but also views of the High Andes. Quito is a vast sprawling city... More

The lovely old quarter of Quito is best experienced by simply wandering the streets, though preferably with a guide book to point out the major buildings to you. Soak up the atmosphere!

Safe and interesting. We really enjoyed wandering around. the city is surrounded by hills (volcanoes) and the streets are hilly. People were friendly and we found quite a few interesting little shops too.

When we been in Quito we visited the Old Town , the monuments are the best preserved of all South America. The churches and museums are simple a reason to add Ecuador to your wish list. My favorite place to see is the Plaza Santo Domingo and Panecillo . If you love cultural tours go there!
