Resembling a type of small bread (panecillo), this hill makes an excellent observation point over Quito and features La Virgen del Panecillo, a majestic sculpture that can be seen from any location in the city.

We decided to walk up the steps but along the way were stopped by police who took our names. In broken English and my limited Spanish I was able to deduce that it was no safe to continue due to the real threat of robbery. He suggested we try again tomorrow via taxi which is what we did. It's beautiful... More

The view is nice, the top of the hill seemed safe to us. On the other hand, I think it's not a must, you have other places where you can enjoy the view. Is the way up safe? It's true, that it's a poor neighborhood. We went up by taxi because we heard that walking up was dangerous. We decided... More

We visited this place during Quito Tour, and it is well worth the time, money and energy to walk up. The sight on Quito is amazing, and the statue itself us also quite special. If you have some time to spare, just do it!

From the top you can walk around the massive statue of the Madonna and get a real feel for the size of Quito. Great views of the many buildings which stretch for miles in all directions.

As we were leaving noticed there is a restaurant there. It makes for a nice picture break. Tons of little stalls selling stuff, and a couple independent dudes selling necklaces on a blanket. Never checked prices. Nice view. Best way to go is on the Hop on Hop Off Bus.

We opted not to view the El Panecillo through a tour but on our own, which was just fine. We planned our trip around the other activities we had planned for the day (self guided tours of churches etc. in the historical district) and spent about an hour and a half there. We took a taxi up to the monument... More

This statue is made of aluminum and high on a mountain top to look over the city. It is just beautiful to see her. She is part of a tour package, that goes to many sites

You've got to go up to see this iconic statue instantly recognizable as "Quito" - don't just look at her from a distance. Go inside. Read the history. Admire the stained glass. Learn how she was made. And what she represents. And of course, enjoy the views looking out over the city from her vantage point. Wonderful.

Parking is tight here but the view is glorious. Souvenirs are for sale and sometimes there are people in costume for your entertainment. It's possible to climb up inside the statue for even better views.
