As of November 6, 2016 our best estimate is that Spectacled bear season will begin at the end of the month. We will update this post as soon as the bears show up. Spectacled bear season can last between 2 weeks and 2 1/2 months. Besides being the official home of the endangered Spectacled bear and thousand other wildlife species, Maquipucuna is a birdwatchers paradise. The Reserve has an internationally awarded Maquipucuna Ecolodge. The nearly 15,000 acres Maquipucuna Reserve, located only 2 hours away from Quito, is also home to at least 376 species of birds, 45 species of mammals, 250 species of butterflies and over 2000 species of plants. That is, Maquipucuna harbors about 10% of Ecuador's plant diversity and 4% of all the bird species known for the entire planet! Maquipucuna has the category of Protected Forest and has been declared as Important Bird Area (IBA).

I just returned after 4 nights at Maquipucuna Cloud Forest Reserve. Have you ever had an experience that was life changing in so many ways? This was it for me. The pure silence (with the only sound being the river rushing), the amazing Arsenio, Luis, and Carlos. The two women cooks who allowed me to learn how to make the... More

Visited the lodge with my friend – reviewed above (April 6, 2014). It’s a beautiful place, and we appreciate what is being done there for the environment and for the local people. However, I’m writing to correct a couple of the responses by the management. I called to make a reservation in the morning – the owner did ask that... More

Dear Stuart g, Maquipucuna is beautiful and Maquipucuna is our passion and we are as involved or more than we ever did. I will not go into further details, because I already provided them in the response to your partner. During your call in the morning, I stressed to you that we only work with confirmed reservations. It saddens me... More

First the positives – lovely location – tremendous rushing river, lots of birds, good trail system – easy access to trails. Good birder guide. Major problem is that it is over priced for what you get and it is not well run. First the price issue: We paid 98 for the room, 20 (ten each) entrance fee for the reserve... More

We appreciate very much all constructive criticism that we receive, as we continuously strive to improve the Maquipucuna experience. We are very sorry that we failed to provide enough of our great coffee, and even more saddened that you used that failure to misconstrue in your review, what really happened. When you called around 10 in the morning to find... More

It has been almost a year since I was there and the magic of Maquipucuna will never leave me. I'm an avid explorer, love the outdoors and nature and a grand place to just relax- this is the place! Simple not complicated, far enough away from city life, beautiful lush green plants, waterfalls, a river view right out my window,... More

We stayed at the lodge, and I will review that experience elsewhere. The hummingbirds did not disappoint. There were plenty to see all day. I was told not to use a flash to photograph them as it's not good for them. As a professional photographer and somewhat knowledgable ecologist, I found this curious and illogical. 90% of the images of... More

After 8 days straight of touring the Galapagos Islands my family and I were delighted to relax and recharge our batteries at Maquipucuna. The atmosphere is very relaxed, with hammocks littering the place, all meals provided (and delicious!) and hummingbirds everywhere you look. We stayed over new year’s eve, and were so humbled by how welcoming the owners, staff and... More

Our family enjoyed the relaxing environment with hammocks and hummingbirds and the sounds of a gurgling stream below the lodge...we wish we could have stayed longer. The food was great and the rooms comfortable. Alas, we did not see the spectacled bear, but we did see some unique birds and learned a lot about the area from the guides.

We just spent several amazing days exploring the trail system in Maquipucuna nature preserve, 2 hrs from Quito. The non-profit Maquipucuna Foundation www.ecotourism.maqui.org raised enough money two decades ago to buy and protect a big swath of the richly biodiverse cloud forest of the Choco Andean corridor. My wife and I have had a lot of experience volunteering with environmental... More

Just got back from a three-night stay in one of the "suites," and I absolutely agree with all the favorable reviews. The site is lovely and relaxing (including the sound of the very nearby river at night); the food is excellent (including the specially made dishes for my vegetarian friend); the rooms were very spacious and clean, with good hot... After 13 years away I returned to Ecuador to visit my family. This was not my first trip to Maqui (I had volunteered there in my youth) but it was certainly the most fulfilling. I can not say enough about the experience - the place has to be the closest thing you get to a Garden of Eden. Walking out... More
