This is some of the best street art I have seen anywhere and worth the effort in walking up and down some very steep streets. Just be careful as tourists can be robbed if not careful. Try riding to the top and walking down to save your legs.

The richness of colors and details made me fall in love with the place! I'll come back here for sure. The walking tour takes about an hour and a half, with a lot of stairs and descents, so be careful with people with reduced mobility. Perfect for taking lots of photos!

If Valparaiso was in Italy or North America it would be a stunning representation of a once thriving port city, as is suggested by it's UNESCO world heritage listing. Instead it's in Chile, where a general lack of civic pride is evident in it's urban areas. Crumbling public buildings, poor roads and paving and the ubiquitous, mindless tagging on everything up to 2 metres high including statues of national heroes, seem to be ignored by the locals with a shrug and expression of resignation. Look beyond the graffiti and decay and of course Valparaiso is stunning, but unless the government and citizens set about maintaining and restoring the city,it's charm will be lost forever.

The historic quarter of Valparaiso is full of color and vibrancy. This city has more personality than any other place in Chile. It is chock-full of beautiful corners and unique buildings. However, the utmost care by locals and authorities alike is required in order to maintain Valparaíso's privileged status. Porteños and visitors have to work together to protect this wonderful city.

Discovered this wacky city for 3 days before our cruise ship left the harbor. What a wild, outrageous place! Crumbling buildings, colorful doors, vertically challenged streets, ancient funicular cars pitching downhill to bypass the cliffy roads to sea level. History includes skirmishes in the harbor between Chile and Peru, see the naval museum. Nobel prize for literature. Take along some spray paint as graffiti is a prominent art form on the crumbling concrete walls, very funky. Cartoonist Lukas put this place on the map with his unusual drawings. Wines are cheap and actually so superior that we took a case on the cruise ship with us, sorry we didn't haul more on board. This surreal place, pitching up and down on several mountainsides, begins to affect you as tho you are living in some kind of crazy cartoon. Not for people who like to live on the level, who like a predictable place, whose favorite color might be beige. Salvador Dali would have been ecstatic about Valparaiso.

Don't go to Valparaiso, Chile. There's nothing really worth seeing there. Plus you will get robbed. I don't mean stealing, I mean brute force robbery. They will push, grab, and push you until they get the stuff out of your hand/neck, even if you have people walking with you.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tours of Valparaiso, Vina del Mar & Santiago with Christian "The Van Man". We had a wonderful tour of all of the cities and he went above and beyond showing us
around all of the great treasures of the cities. His hospitality was fantastic and we highly recommend him. He will make your trip to Chile a fantastic experience.

Once the financial, intellectual and cultural centre of Chile; visiting Valparaiso is a unique experience. Declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2003, Valparaiso is characterized by its colorful streets, European architecture and of course, its famous elevators. Like no other place in the world, Valparaiso will enchant you with its eclectic mix of cultures.

Seriously, what was UNESCO thinking? The entire area is covered in ugly graffiti, dog droppings, and trash. The locals will tell you the graffiti is art to be preserved, it's garbage and makes the place one huge eyesore. Do not waste your time. Ride a few of the lifts and get out of town. Don't forget to clean your shoes afterwards. The whole place needs about 1000 full time powerwashers! Yuck!

Enjoyed the day trip to Valparaiso so much that we plan to return and spend a few days there. The city has winding streets with great graffiti art that gives the place a wonderful Bohemian feel. It was fun to walk the labyrinth of streets, go into the local shops, ride the ascensores and visit La Sabastiana.
