We happened upon this working lighthouse on our drive back to Santiago. It Is the first lighthouse in the network of Faros de Chile, inaugurated in 1837. It also has the honor of being the most powerful lighthouse in South America. It’s easy to understand the need when you look at the wild ocean and rocky coast! Also, the port of Valparaiso was key to the international sea trade of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The lighthouse has a Museum Room called George Slight with limited hours (closed on Sundays).

Was here with 4 friends in August 2018, while going down to look at the ocean, our car was broken into and 4 backpacks were stolen with about 10k worth of goods including 2 passports. Police at the airport forced us to say in the “police report” if that’s what you want to call it, that our car was vandalized and that the passports were lost. They said that if we wanted to report everything stolen, we would have to stay in the country until the investigation was over! Travelers beware!!!

Visited in October. Beautiful view, very quiet place, just a few people there. We walked there from ascensor Artilleria, it was about 25min. Possible take bus to station cementario 3. Back to port we walked by the coastal promenade. Also very nice, wide sidewalk.

Never go to Valparaiso, the worst place I've ever been to in my life. I was robbed, they opened the car and took everything I had.
