    Good for some serious walking
A friend suggested a long walk in this park on the west side of Santiago. In the end I walked from Mirador Piramide to the Japanese Garden. A long walk, but a good way to work off jet lag. It's not hard, but allow several hours. The park is beautiful, with awesome views of the city and the mountains beyond.

Do not underestimate the size of this "park" it's big
Do not underestimate the size of this "park" it's big. There are lots of off road paths. The roads themselves wind all over the park. Full of locals enjoying exercise at weekends. Make sure you have water as the kiosks/cafes are quite far apart. The busiest part is the south which ends up having a different name (Metropolitano). Good viewing points when you reach the top. You cannot get a condola etc to this the northern aspect.

One very big park, wear good sneakers!
This park is huge! Make sure you're wearing some sneakers with good grip if you plan on taking any dirt paths.. if they're dry they can be slippery. We took the cable car up to see Santuario inmaculada concepcion.. I'm so glad we did as the hike back down was a trek in itself. It pays to also be aware of passing cyclists and runners as many come to exercise here. Some amazing views to take in as well.. choose a clear day to go if you can.

It is one of the most touristic spots in Santiago and to our surprise it is totally unserviced. The place is not outstanding, but is interesting to walk up the hill through the paths and enjoy the great views from the top, where there is also a nice stone chapel. But it is dangerous, an young american couple was attacked, all their belongings stolen, he got a broken nose. The guy was bleeding and no one was able to help him at all. Nobody speaks english. We gave him a hand, helping them translate to the guards what have happened, but I had to start making a big fuzz so they could get medical aid. All that was available was a security company car that took them to the police station and would then take them to the hospital. No services on site, in one of the most visited places in town, no ambulance, no police, no english or any other language spoken for tourists. Not worth the risk at all.

One of the most beautiful, well maintained parks I've ever visited in South America. My boyfriend and I took the funicular up to the top of Cerro San Cristobal (3000 pesos/person) and opted to walk down the rest of the way. The paths are clearly marked and there were spacious walking lanes along most of the roads so we never felt fearful of cars and bikes making their way up and down the mountain. On the way down, there are plenty of scenic views to enjoy as well as mini parks, statues and other interesting sites along the way. In total, it took less than an hour to make it all the way down. A great way to spend a few hours and escape the bustle of the city!

We only went here for a few hours and took the funicular to the top. Great views up there, gives you an idea of how big Santiago is and puts the location into perspective. We didn't bother with the zoo and were only there for a short period of time. But still worth the look.

We spent a few days in Santiago and there are various attractions, parks and areas of interest. However, this is not just any old park. It is set close to the Andes, it has two swimming pools, botanical gardens and a zoo as well as a multitude of hikes and treks. We visited the pool at the top of the park which is not cheap but well worth a few hours in the sun with the Andes in close sight.

It's a steep, interesting drive up the hill. Lovely really. At the top you have a spectacular view of the city.

I recommend you to enter the park through Providencia district entrance and leave it in Bellavista District. Start your tour by the japanese garden, and then take a gondola to cross to the other side of the park. While you cross the park by gondola, you can appreciate the landscape of Santiago and the Cordilheiras from the heights. It's a nice ride. The gondola drops you on the top of Cerro San Cristobal, where you can enjoy the beautiful sunset. Then go down by funicular (cable car) to Bellavista District, which has many good restaurants, bars, and attractions.

Santiago is a city of hills and small mountains. One of the most prominent is Cerro San Cristobal, which is home to Parque Metropolitano. My wife and I visited the park earlier this year during our two-day walking tour of the city. There are two options available to get to the summit... a hike up the trail or enjoying a ride on the inclined railway (funicular). If I remember correctly, the cost was 2,000 pesos (about $3 US roundtrip). The park is clean and well-maintained, and a popular stop for both international and Chileno tourists alike. The funicular makes a brief stop halfway up the mountain at the entrance to the city's zoological park. (We did not visit the zoo.) The summit of San Cristobal offers a spectacular view of Santiago de Chile. There are also a dozen or so arts and craft vendors who offer reasonably priced souvenirs. Venture a little higher, and you will find the statue of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception that keeps a watchful eye over the city.

An ideal visit trip to this landmark would be a trip up the mountain in the morning, followed by lunch, shopping and sightseeing in the city's trendy Bellavista district at the base of the mountain. If anything, a trip to Parque Metropolitano is worth the effort to capture some beautiful panoramic pictures.
