Above ground you have the presidential palace, an impressive building and surrounds. Includes regular changing of the guard activity if your timing right. At one end is a below ground cultural centre that is also worth visiting. A pleasant part of the city.

Given the turbulent history of La Moneda in recent generations, this cultural center is an excellent redemption of this space. As a resident of Santiago I frequently visit Centro Cultural to enjoy the temporary exhibitions that rotate every 5 months or so. As a history teacher at a local school I often bring student groups to see exhibitions of Japanese samurai armor, Qing dynasty art from the Palace Museum, the art of Picasso, and Islamic objects of art, just to name a few. There are also frequent fairs and musical performances in the lobby area. Centro Cultural consistently attracts top notch exhibitions and they are displayed with taste. Admissions is free every day until 1pm. There are other small exhibitions to visit and cultural venues to explore. The gift shop on the top floor are among the best in Santiago. This is also a great place to escape the sun on a hot summer day.

It is a very interesting underground museum in Santiago. very well organized. It has a cinema for movies off-circuit, and some exhibition room. When we were there there was an exhibition about the Ancient Egypt, which was not large, but well organized and quite nice. There is also an area for kids to play, with some museum staff interacting with kids (maybe it only happens during Chilean school vacation??). A quick hint is that the main exhibition is(was) free until noon.

Watch out for pickpockets on Alemeda. We had been warned but thought "that'll never happen to us." Famous last words!! The cops have so many complaints that they just smile and give you paperwork to complete.

At the time of our visit there was an impressive exhibit of Greco-Roman art from the Vatican Museum collection in Rome. Check for exhibits at this museum when you are in Santiago de Chile.

My teenage son was whinging the whole way that the changing of the guard at Moneda Palace would be boring, etc, afterwards he promptly turned to me and sheepishly said "Actually mum that was quite good".
It was a shame we had a meeting to go to so we didn't have time to tour inside. The tour is free but you have to book ahead of time.
The changing of the guard takes place every odd-numbered day (including weekends) If the change falls on a week day, the ceremony is at 10 AM, and if it’s on the weekend, it takes place at 11 PM. Come 20 minutes early to get a good spot, as there can be a crowd of tourists. It is good to see some women in the guard too.
There are lots of homeless dogs in the square and if they want food they will come and nudge your hand if you don't want to feed them they will happily go on there way.
You will have to look out for pick pockets though, I think I accidentally caught one out a she bumped my backpack ever so slightly, I smiled at her and asked her "Moneda Palace?" with open palms gesturing that I was lost and she looked shocked, shook her head and walked away quickly. I don't keep my valuables in my back pack so she was welcome to my dirty handkerchief. :)

Modern and nice, the place is located underground, almost underneath La Moneda, and it is part museum, part high quality local handicrafts shop. Very much worth a visit both to get a taste of the local art and for the chance to acquire some high quality Chilean handicrafts.

Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda is a relatively new contemporary art space located on the south side of the Palacio de la Moneda, a block north of O’Higgins near the La Moneda metro stop. It is entirely underground and the glass ceiling provides a diffuse natural light source for the main canyon of the facility. When my wife and I visited there was a yoga class going on in the main area and combined with the hanging artwork, cafes, shops around the perimeter it created a really pleasant atmosphere. It was quiet and tranquil like a museum without being stuffy and oppressive. Since its free in the mornings and it makes for a nice break on your walking tour of Santiago, duck in for quick snack or coffee. And there are separate gifts shops for each price point.
The galleries branch off from the main area and depending the exhibit you may or may not care to visit them. Best to check what’s showing ahead of time on their website at http://www.ccplm.cl/sitio/
But note that the English language version and the Spanish language version give different opening hours. In English, it did not seem that the Centro was open on Saturday! But the Spanish has it correct and it is indeed open on weekends.
Anyway, on our visit we really liked the main exhibits. Combined with the overall design of the space, the nice combination of services and the convenient location I would recommend this to anyway taking a day tour of Santiago.

We went to see the Presidential Palace, but you can’t get close due to all the unrest recently in Santiago. They no longer have a changing of the guard and the area is all fenced off. Be aware of your surroundings when you are there as there are pickpockets that are looking for targets.

What is the exhibit at this time (May 2018) ?
Written 8 May 2018
According to Biobiochile, a Chilean news portal, the current exhibit is: Great Latin American Artists (until July 22nd, 2018). It covers 6 different topics: "Imagined, landscapes, Word and machine, The artist's image, America looks at the Other [note that "America" in Latin America means the totality of the double continent], The lived-in body ["The body we inhabit ?], and Humor and violence in Latin America. I haven't seen this exhibit, but given the excellence of the exhibit I visited in November 2017, this promises to be very stimulating and fascinating.

Pessoal, boa tarde.

Written 21 April 2015
Olá, as trocas acontecem a cada dois dias às 10h da manhã, caso o dia caia num fim de semana ou feriado acontece às 11h.
No site do Governo Chileno tem mais informações eu acho.
