DO NOT BUY FISH OR SEAFOOD!!
They sell seafood without refrigeration. Not fresh fish. Smoked fish is usually decaying fish. They don't keep them refrigerated, they don't have a label or they don't give a ticket.

The only good thing is a place inside that sells good quality cheeses, smoked pork, sausages and cured meats.

Typical fishing place, located in a bay of Puerto Montt. It is a tourist attraction site where we find a small beach, a craft fair, the busy market that sells fish, seafood and cheese, and several restaurants. We can see when the boats arrive and the sea lions approach along with numerous birds in search of food. We arrived by public transportation and walked a few blocks, it seems unsafe, but we didn't have any problems. It is a port area, a few meters away is the cruise terminal.

I am leaving Puerto Montt disappointed, I bought seafood at the Angelmó fair (market) and they were in poor condition. We made ceviche at home and I and 6 of my relatives got sick to our stomachs.
I hope they improve or supervise those places more.

I had a pleasant opinion of Angelmó. Everything was very clean and with very varied craft stalls and convenient prices. We had lunch in a stilt house, with excellent quality seafood. Then we buy top quality seafood. Many local people who offer you their products without problems. We feel 100% safe!

If you are going to Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas you should visit this fish market, where you can find good smoked salmon, that since it doesn't need refrigeration (if you don't open it), is a very useful food for travelers. Also try the Merkén (a Chilean smoked Chili) from this place and the potatoes from Chiloe.

When visiting P.Montt, you should definitely visit Angelmo for its lively artesania market and big fish market. Try a salmon empañada, they are delicious! The setting of the bay with all the little boats is nice as well. Definitely a must see.

Typical fish market where to encounter local seafood and handcrafts. Not a long walk from town and with an typical port feel. Careful where you choose to eat. We were warned about health conditions by locals.

The area makes for very pleasant strolling on a (rare) sunny day in Puerto Montt with a wonderful array of woollens, artesania and art, but beware the prices! Lapis Lazuli is more than double what you'll pay in Puerto Varas, so it's worth the 1600 peso (there and back) bus ride to buy, although the selection in Angelmo is unbeatable. Just take one of the blue mini buses that leaves the main bus terminal every few minutes. Be sure to go on a weekday or Saturday as not all the stores are open in PV on Sundays

We dropped anchor in the Puerto Montt bay and "tendered in" on the Grand Princess lifeboats. First of all, I have to give a shout out to the Puerto Montt seagulls. They are apparently well fed, because thousands of them came out to play in the little swells and currents created by our ship at anchor. It was like they were at a seagull amusement park, chatting and laughing and flapping around, just having a good old time.

From the dock it was an easy walk (to the left) along the seaside road to Angelmo. It's hard to say how far it is from the Puerto Montt dock because every ten feet is another vendor of local wares (mostly). Bring your dollars or your pesos. You aren't going to get better deals than here on a scarf, a sweater, a poncho, a hat woven with llamas on it, a shawl or even a straw tango hat. There is some jewelry but nothing jumped out at me. One thing I wish I bought was a little hand made mama doll made of yarn, with a baby in a backpack. Super colorful and only 5 or 6 dollars. Kicking myself now.

Finally, you reach the fish market that is Angelmo. The people are just like the seagulls. Happy, busy, chatty. Use whatever Spanish you know. They'll nod and tell you all sorts of stuff whether you understand it or not, like how to wash your new sweater. Or what the big black mystery blocks are (they're seaweed...for soup). We were there in February and so many kids around - it took me a minute to remember that's their summer and they were out of school. Some were shucking oysters, or spraying down crabs, or buying local cheese, or hanging out along the waterfront. Very nice. Very authentic. No hurries, no worries. One of my favorite stops of a 32-day cruise!

As cruisers, we weren't looking for food. But the smells were incredible. I'd try the local fare if I were you. It's going to be fresh!

Angelmo was the only bright spot in an otherwise drab, uninteresting, typical port city. A strip of shops with some artesan. stuff as well as a little area of restaurants. We actually had very good fish, inexpensive in one of the little restaurants...although it was rainy, cold, and nasty, we enjoyed some time with the little shops. You can take a coop taxi from the city, they are very inexpensive and plentiful.....
