I did carretera austral backpacking and hitchhiking. It's amazing! And it's tough. Most part of the road is not paved. This brings very bad conditions. There is very few public transport (like 1-2 bus / day). And in high season (Jan-Feb) there are lots of backpackers. So, there's big competition in hitchhiking. It's like 5 hitchhikers for each car :)... More

We started in Puerto Montt, went down to Villa O'Higgins (10 days) and then went back up. This road is 40% paved but is getting better each day. The views alongside it are simply unmissable!

We had something incredible to see and do every day. We hired a 4x4 (which you absolutely need) from Europcar in Coyhaique (we did book this through Kayak two months ahead of time). There's too much to write except it's all beautiful and you must go so I'll try and note helpful tips!: The route we took was as follows--... More

The Carretera Austal is with 1200 km too long to describe in a short text with its amazingly beautiful and varied natural landscapes and many road conditions. The road has asphalt and gravel sections. In the rain, it can be slippery and in the dry period very dusty. Left curves on the gravel roads need to be taken with great... More

Also known as the southern end of the Pan American Highway this road, especially in Autumn (late April early May) is amazing and for my experience the further south you go the better it gets. On Foot, on a bicycle, on a motorbike or in a car, take your time and enjoy every minute. Keep your eyes open when coming... More

Started from BBA airport near Coyhaique, rented a 4x4, paved road south until Cerro Castillo, from there onwards gravel roads only ... be aware when planning the trip south that often the road few km's south of Cerro Castillo is closed in the afternoon when using explosives to build a paved road. Count on an average speed much less than... More

we started Austral road in Chaiten, more specific by the shores of Lake Yelcho. There we had the best camping experience in the whole trip. Lake Yelcho was y far our best stage of the trip. We recommend the Restaurant at Yelcho en la Patagonia, simply superb! From there we wen all the way up from Cuesta del Moraga to... More

I discovered Carretera Austral by accident, thavelling with some random, crazy US guys via Chile/Argentina. Totally desolated, still-not-touristy area of Chile. Full of grumpy gauchos, the only herds being the sheep herds (not tourist herds!), and what's more - the road itself. Jumpy, narrow, crossing pampa/jungle/mountain desert. More adventurous sister of Ruta 40. Take 4WD, you'll enjoy it!
