It was the included excursion off our Viking Ocean cruise. About a 15 minute drive from the dock at Stanley.
The bus dropped us off at the trail head and told us shuttle buses would be by every 30 minutes.
We walked the trail overlooking the beach, penguins and we even saw a sea lion looking for dinner.
The scenery was beautiful.
If you wanted to you could continue walking the trail all the way back to Stanley, but we didn’t want to take a chance on missing the ship’s departure.

Located around four miles from Stanley, ‘Gypsy Cove’ certainly did not disappoint. Stretching along a small part of the Cape Pembroke peninsula, the small beach boasted white sands that appeared untouched by human life.

Due to the time of the year, we didn’t spot any Magellanic Penguins but we did catch a glimpse of some Black-Crowned Night-Herons and, to my amazement, many Dolphins (casually playing along the shallower waters).

The walk to the cove was fairly steady and there was a parking area nearby (adjacent to a new(ish) public toilet block). If you carry on walking you will find the remains of a couple of guns, presumably from the Second World War.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. I took my time and tried to embrace the surroundings. The silence was very soothing and the array of wildlife occupying the area was comforting to witness.

The trail is improved but it is really not suitable for walkers, wheel chairs or strollers. The trail surface is gravely in places, narrow in others, and down-right natural with sharp rocks in others. There are some inclines to navigate and the trip tends to be on the long side but know there are benches along the route. The views of the wildlife, penguins and seals, is best accomplished with binoculars, and if you have a telephoto lens for your camera, I’d bring it. The shore line and water are beautiful. There is restrooms available and there appeared to be ample parking. The cove is not more than four km from the dock/port. To far to walk, perhaps, but not an expensive cab ride.

We got off our cruise ship and took a local tour company excursion to Gypsy Cove. The local people were friendly and the drive to the cove was in a van with the driver pointing out a few highlights. Once getting to the cove our footwear had to be sprayed for the protection of the penguin colony. We then trekked through some sandy areas to the shore where we saw a large colony of penguins, I believe they were King penguins. Walking through the sand was okay for most of us but challenging for anyone with mobility issues, kind of like walking through fresh snow. There were so many penguins, well worth the trek to get there!!

We caught the shuttle from the visitor's information centre downtown for the 15 minute ride to Gypsy Cove on Yorke Bay. It was a nice place to view penguins. There was a pleasant path to walk around and some old gun emplacements to see. Clean restrooms are available - always a plus.
It was nice that there was a new shuttle every 15 minutes or so, enabling one to stay as long as one wished.

Hi Rex

It was good to meet up with you last week and thanks again for showing us around the Island - Joan and I both thoroughly enjoyed our time with you.

We arrived home in Scotland this morning. It was 35C when we left Buenos Aires and 2C when we touched down in Edinburgh - a bit of a shock to the system!!

All the best

On our last evening we took the signs to Gypsy Cove, but stopped off at Yorke Bay and ran out of time to go to Gypsy Cove. It reminded me of Lulworth Cove in Dorset with its white sands and iconic bay shape!! At the moment only penguins enjoy the beach, Magellanic and 3 King Penguins when we were there who were unbothered by the Upland Geese that sent the smaller penguins scattering. We understand that by April 2020, the mine clearance should be completed so that you will be able to walk on this beach, shame for the penguins.

Take one of the Penguin Tours buses from the waterfront. Only £15 return. Runs very frequently. Gypsy Cove is beautiful and a favourite haunt for penguins. We also saw a pod of dolphins swimming in the shallows. When we returned to the car park, there were two tour buses waiting to take customers back to Stanley. Brilliant service and a fraction of the cost our cruise company wanted for a Falklands excursion.

Absolutely superb location. We visited at the end of the nature walk from Stanley.
The view from the path is stunning.
You can’t visit the beach as still potential for mines.
Very clean public toilets at car park
Penguins everywhere frequent stops as they cross in front of you.

We took a three hour nature trek and at the end we were rewarded with Gypsy Cove. They were everywhere. It was delightful to see mama and babies in there nests and “teens” playing on the beach and water. We he only downside was witnessing the cordoned off area that still has land mins from the 1982 war.
