About
Located within the depths of the historic and luxuriant Fort Canning Hill, the Battlebox is Singapore’s only World War II bunker that is still operational, albeit as a historic site, today. Built in 1936 and completed in 1939, the Battlebox served as the headquarters for the defending Allied forces against the invading Japanese army in the final days of the Malayan Campaign (8 Dec 1941 — 15 Feb 1942). It was here that Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival and 11 other commanders made the decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese, resulting in possibly the greatest defeat of a British army ever in battle and the beginning of 3 ½ years of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore. Today, the Battlebox has been restored with its rooms recreated based on historical records to what it could have been like during those final fateful days leading to the fall of Singapore.

    Interesting Attraction
Battle box is back open and a very interesting place to visit. As you go through if you’ve taken your phone you can get a commentary on events that took place and about the 12 rooms. At the moment it is free, not sure if this will continue once it fully opens in February 24, with some additional features. Worth a visit if interested in WW2. Please note it is closed on a Monday and Tuesday.

This was one of the best places I have ever been when travelling. The staff are very helpful, and for just a small donation I was able to do the audio tour which was informative without being exhausting. It felt eerie being down in the bunker, and a great job has been done to make the rooms look like they would have in the early 1940’s. I learnt a lot about the fall of Singapore. Highly recommend a visit if you are interested in history.

Must see bunker exhibit for history buffs
We walked here from our hotel with no expectations and were blown away. The bunker is a must see for history buffs, especially if you are interested in Singapore during WWII. I am puzzled by the comments about the difficulty of online booking. The 6 of us walked up and had no trouble getting in nor in understanding the exhibits, which were awesome! It was a good complement to the National Museum across the street from this exhibit.

Excellent time capsule of the fall of Singapore
The staff are extremely helpful and guide you though the process of downloading the audio guide. They ask for a small donation - starting at $5 for the audio guide. I very much enjoyed the audio guide. The bunker has 12 rooms which have props and information on the wall. It is very well kept and very very interesting. Overall this one was one of the best things I did in Singapore. Definitely worth the $5 for the audio guide. Just make sure you bring headphones.

Battlebox is OPEN with self guided audio tours
Found the history fascinating and the dioramas and self guided audio guide was excellent. We couldn’t find any tours and the only information online said you must have a guided tour. This is wrong. They offer the self guided audio by donation (asking for S$5, S$10 or S$50). You must go to Fort Canning Park and walk to the Battlebox. There, you will be helped. They have a small gift shop too. Well worth seeing.

The most moving experience I have encountered to date.
Absolutely amazing. We got a little history lesson from Raymond before we entered. So knowledgeable. We were so grateful. It’s a great experience. From the time you walk down the steps until you exit. The settings and memorabilia are so good. If only those walls could talk. I have been to many jails and historical places including Alcatraz. This is the best yet. Be sure to do guide if you can afford otherwise the audio is great too but make sure you read the info in each room. Lots more to learn. Keep your eye out for the Japenese writing on the walls. Just amazing!

This is one of the best things we did
Battlebox is an historical self guided tour, of the bunker at Fort Canning Hill in the park. My husband and I enjoy history, and he particularly likes War stuff, but this is a lot about Singapore and how it 'came to be' the way it is. You can take a self guided audio tour of this historical war bunker, occupied by the British on their failed mission to protect and hold Singapore. At the first sign of trouble they capitulated, but you'll find out all about the lilly livered, girly officers here, and what happened, and what they 'endured'. Its a shame they didn't have more guts. (Shame they weren't Australian). It was fascinating, and honest and real, with real stuff still in the tunnels and bunkers, that seems like you're back in the past. VERY worth it and very well done.

It is not possible to book a tour/visit in person. You’re told to download an app — which a tourist may not be able to do without a local mobile plan.
The Battlebox website also has no booking system.

An interesting place to spend an hour learning about the final days before Britain’s surrender to the Japanese during WW2.

The venue has an immediate and powerful atmosphere and is of natural interest for anyone seeking information about the fall of Singapore.

Booking on-line was difficult as the venue website had no link to the booking site. On arrival the officials were extremely helpful but failed to explain or equip us with the audio tour which resulted in a false start as we had to return to the front desk after beginning the tour.
The audio tour had to be d/l onto 3 personal devices and that was a problem when only one of the three had bought the ticket. To d/l required a data connection and visitors to Singapore without a local sim would not be able to d/l. For a hearing-impaired visitor this also might be a problem.
The exhibit itself was authentically sparse populated with period artefacts, furniture and manikins telling the story. Little thought had been given to the way explanatory text was presented: the dim light coupled with dense white small font print on a black background was very trying for an able reader - anyone even slightly dyslexic would have given up! With several audio tours playing simultaneously the experience was unnecessarily noisy. Earphones had been advised - but only on arrival!
An opportunity has been missed here. The audio tour narration was good but delivery through mobile should be ditched and transferred to room-specific speakers motion activated. Text should be printed on ivory or yellow (dyslexic friendly) and content reduced to enable a much larger font. Front-of-house and ticketing needs to be smoother.

This is a fascinating museum dedicated to the circumstances leading to the fall of Singapore during the Second World War. The bunker is very atmospheric and the commentary was very good. The commentary works through your phone and I would say it is a ‘must’ to get the most out of your visit. We found the on-line booking system a little difficult to navigate a this is the only reason for not giving this tour five stars. Well worth a visit!
