MacRitchie Nature Trail
MacRitchie Nature Trail

About
A short trip from the city center lies the serenity of MacRitchie Reservoir, part of Singapore’s water catchment system that captures rain water to help supply the island’s growing population. Trails surround the park, which has an upgraded visitor’s center featuring a café, restrooms and information station. The best views are from the TreeTop Walk, a 250-meter suspension bridge across the rainforest canopy, which can be accessed along the seven-kilometer Venus Loop. Wear hiking shoes and bring water.

- NickyP54Bargara, Australia1,494 contributionsDefinitely worth exploringJust the ticket after sitting on a plane for 13 hours. We caught the bus from the CBD to the stop adjacent to the Park at Venus Drive and the Trailhead for the walk, which is situated behind the car park. Plenty of information boards, including one about wild boars. We didn't encounter any, but there were plenty of monkeys, squirrels and wild cockerels, and we also spotted a giant centipede and a monitor lizard. The predominantly uphill hike to the suspension bridge should not be underestimated in the sultry heat, so take plenty of water. It is worth it for the experience of crossing the bouncy bridge and taking in the views out across the forest canopy. Note the route over the bridge and loop return is one way only and there are a series of steep steps to negotiate on the downward descent. Allow 2-3 hours for a round trip. There are a couple of rest huts en route, the main one being the Ranger Station, which has both toilet facilities and drinking water if needed. All in all, a quiet green oasis definitely worth exploring, but don't get caught photographing the water service station facility, otherwise you will be shot.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 March 2024
- KityaymaSydney, Australia574 contributionsA great place to see monkeys and other wildlifeWe were short on time so we did the boardwalk loop (Prunus Trail and Petai Trail Loop) within the main loop. And I wasn't wearing the right shoes (something enclosed and made for walking/hiking is recommended) so this was a good option. The boardwalk loop is mostly shaded and flat (with some stairs), and it loops along the water. We saw heaps of monkeys, which thrilled me but barely rated a glance from the locals. We saw a lot of birds too as well as lizards, a turtle and butterflies. I'm sure there'd be even more to see early in the morning or at the end of the day. Judging by the number of walkers and runners and the equipment at the start of the trail, this is a popular spot for locals to exercise. There are toilets, bubblers and vending machines at the visitor centre and if you check the map there you'll see where you can find other similar facilities along the trail. The MRT station is about 15 minutes walk away and plenty of buses regularly pass by the reservoir from both directions. I wish I'd had time to do the whole loop including the Treetop Trail but it was a stinking hot day and our last in Singapore so, next time.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 April 2024
- batteriesre-charged81 contributionsEscape from the cityNot in the guidebooks I read but so glad we found it. Literally a short car ride outside Singapore centre and a great easy trek to see some cheeky monkeys close up. Watch your belongings as others have mentioned! These monkeys are pickpocket experts 🤣. Take plenty of water as I didn't see anywhere selling any. We used a Grab transfer which was cheap enough and easy.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 August 2024
- CDNTerryToronto, Canada573 contributionsGreat conservation area in Singapore!!What a fantastic nature hike so close to downtown Singapore. Came here for a great hike, the boardwalks around the reservoir were easy to hike, through the jungle to protect us from the sun and close to the reservoir to enjoy some cooling breezes. We saw long-tailed macaques (monkeys), squirrels, monitor lizards, birds and even a flying fox resting on a tree. We only hiked a couple kilometres close to the reservoir but there are well over 12 km of trails. Made for a great way to see the natural floral and fauna, great signage to keep you on the right paths and lots of informative placards detailing the trees, flowers, birds and animals. Lots of butterflies and dragon flies but no biting or stinging insects to bother us!! Easy to get to as well, we took the 166 bus from the Little India MRT station (subway), 20 minute ride and let’s you off right at the entrance to the trails (we got off at the Mother Theresa Home stop but you can get off the one before too)Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 September 2024

This hike was one of the best I’ve ever done! If you’re planning a trip to Singapore, I would highly recommend this to you. There are a lot of monkeys and native animals so do be cautious, especially when eating food! It allows tourists to see the more natural side of Singapore and how they have tried to bring back some greenery into this amazing city. If you’re into active activities, I would definitely recommend this.

The trails in Macritchie Reservoir appeal to both tourist and locals alike. One short scenic trail is to walk along the Macritchie Nature trail (which starts quite near to Marymount mrt station) followed by the Petai and Prunus Trails. This round loop took less than an hour. Petai and Prunus trails are actually boardwalks skirting the reservoir. At times the turquoise blue water reminded me of Plitvice Lakes in Croatia. There are the occasional wooden benches and information boards which highlights some of the trees and plants seen in the vicinity. There are a few steps to encounter but it is not strenous to climb these few steps.
Another lovely trail is to walk the Lornie Trail (starting point is after the zigzag bridge) followed by Chemperai Boardwalk. A longer route is to walk Lornie trail to the end followed by Jering Trail and then Chemperai Trail. Again, both Jering Trail and Chemperai Trail are boardwalk trails skirting the reservoir. On days when the water is still, the mirror reflection of the trees on the water is a scene to behold. This trail takes about an hour of brisk walk. It is so peaceful to do these trails on a weekday. Highly recommended for a dose of exercise and appreciation of nature.

Love the trail. Good for jogging but be careful of many tree roots, large pebbles that may trip you while jogging. One whole loop is about 12km. Best time to jog s between 7.30am and 9am. It is cooling and sometimes windy along the water reservoir. If you don't like crowd, go during weekdays.

This 11km long loop trail gives renewed meaning to Singapore’s urban jungle. From flying tree snakes to monkeys and an array of colorful birds, the MacRitchie trails earn you sweat equity. Like the ants that trail through the jungle, a steady stream of hikers and runners wind their way through the maze of trails.
There are various trail options and access points to choose from. Signs and maps at every intersection offer reassurance that you’ll know where you are. The maps are color coded and labeled with distances and trail names. There’s also lots of interpretive signs highlighting the ecosystems flora and fauna.
While you’re enjoying nature, consider the 250 meter suspension bridge, canopy tower and boardwalks.

It was such a lovely nature walk so near to the city and yet it feels like you are miles away from the city. There are various types of walks recommended starting from 3km to more than 10 km walk. The highlight is to walk to the Treetop Walk and it was quite amazing.Love to come back again.

A perfect retreat from a crowded city centre. Even though the trails are well maintained, I recommend you to have trainers or hiking boots, loads of water and mosquitoe repellent with you.
If you're lucky, you'll be able to see squirrels, lizards and macaques walking around freely. Two points you must not miss are the treetop walk and Jelutong tower. You'll see some amazing views from there. Enjoy the walk!

Most Singaporeans who enjoy hiking would typically either visit Macritchie or Bukit Timah. If you enjoy some greenery, I would definitely recommend you to take some time to explore the surrounding here. Hey, whoever said there's no nature in Singapore, here's something to prove them wrong! :)

My second time hiking at Macritchie, the yellow route. It has certain difficulties due to the uneven terrains , so a good pair of hiking shoes will help. Great for working out and being close to nature. The best time for the 3-4 hour hike is 7am, right after sunrise.

In addition to the earth trails such as the Lornie and MacRitchie Nature Trails, my favourite are the boardwalk trails such as the Prunus Trail, Petai Trail, Chemperai Trail and the Jering Trail.
The boardwalk trails in MacRitchie are lovely as they are along the perimeter of the MacRitchie Reservoir so that walking along them provides a good view of the occasional turquoise water on one side and a forest on the other side. It provides a fond memory of my walk in Plitvice Lakes in Croatia.
I also learned a fair bit about trees by reading the information boards placed at regular intervals such as the wood of Tembusu tree is used for chopping board because of the bacteria resistant tannin present in the wood. Tembusu tree is easily recognisable due to its unique bark and can spot quite a few Tembusu trees along the Petai and Prunus Trails.

Do you mean taking MRT from Orchard to MacRitchie Reservoir? The nearest MRT station for which you have to walk 15 to 20 minutes is Caldecott Station.

We have a 6mnth baby boy and would like to do a trip to MacRitchie but I am not keen on taking a taxi without a carseat. Can you store carseats at the visitor centre? Or is there another way to deal with the journey to MR and being able to do around the lake with a baby carrier.
Written 29 June 2021
Nope no lockers as such to keep the baby seats- it’s a pleasant weather then good else might be difficult with ur baby - no shades inside the park

Hi, James Tan, I read and am keen to hike the same route as yours from Mushroom cafe to Bukit Timah Summit.
However, based on the trail, could you advise in more detail, from the Ammo Camp after the BKE, how do I reach the Pipeline Trail? I intend to to take pictures of the view from the Pipeline. I have intended to hike this trail this coming weekend 27 Feb 2021.
Many thanks.
Written 24 February 2021
Sorry,
Look out for entrance to pipeline trail from Rifle Range road on your right. If you miss it, you can also reach it opp to the murnane reservoir.
Written 24 February 2021
Yes, there are toilet and shower facilities near to the entrance where there is a cafe as well.

No.
Mostly because of the prevalent climate

MacRitchie Resevoir offers a wide variety of trails. The nature reserve view is most spectacular from the edge side of the boardwalk where it's peaceful and easy to walk along.
It's not advisable to walk along the paths after sunset as it gets quite dark and it isn't well lit.
Be sure to watch out for the monkeys that lurk in the shadows of the jungle. Keep an eye on your belongings as they may want to wear your sunglasses or drink your water bottles.
There are several routes which are safe to walk along. If you desire an adrenaline rush then hike to the Tree Tops. If you are keen, be sure to wear proper footwear like running shoes or hiking boots as it can get quite muddy in some parts especially if it has just rained. Be sure to bring mosquito repellent to prevent bites during the summer months when it tends to rain a lot more.
I've been on this hike 5 times during different months of the year and every time I see something new and always finished the hike feeling rejuvenated!
You will love it. Have fun exploring!
