I used to visit Tiong Bahru Plaza by taking the shuttle bus from IKEA Alexandra. However, with effect from 1 September 24, IKEA has ceased operation of this service. Nevertheless, I still drive here this Sunday to visit the Don Don Donki Japanese chain store with my wife. It is a less than 10 min drive from IKEA. This is the 16th outlet that the chain opened in Singapore and is located at the 3rd floor of the Plaza beside the Koptiam.

My wife likes to top up some of the groceries here. There are things we could not find at our local supermarkets. One of these is the natto beans. Natto is fermented soyabean which reputedly benefits gut health. Of course, similar equivalent products which have health benefits can be found in our local supermarkets which may include fermented tempeh, kimchi, etc but we prefer natto beans.

The other item we shopped here is the unagi fish. I like the slimy taste and have a liking for such food and the bento unagi rice set here. The Japnese chain is well-known for their freshness of such fish. Deep sea water fishes are rich in Omega 3 which are essential fatty acid for the normal functioning of our mitochondria. Research evidence has shown that the dysfunctioning of the mitochondria resulted in many of the metabolic disorders we see today including heart diseases and cancers.

Shopping at the Japanese chain open up me to the Japanese culture of eating. Glad that they open up a store here.

Tiong Bahru Plaza is a rectangular-shaped building.
There are two banks, a small Golden Village cinema, traditional Chinese medicine centre, a row of upscale F&B outlets on the first floor, FairPrice and food court in the basement.

Conveniently linked to underground Tiong Bahru MRT station.
Good place to stop by if you happen to be in Tiong Bahru.
I would like to try the Tongue Tip Lanzhou Beef Noodles someday.

This morning walked along Rail Corridor to New Creation Church to attend the Sunday service. After the service, took the free shuttle bus from Buona Vista MRT station Exit C to IKEA. Had my lunch at the IKEA Swedish restaurant and after lunch, wandered around the mall for a while before taking the free shuttle bus again to Tiong Bahru Plaza.

Since moving to Queenstown, I only came to Tiong Bahru Plaza 3 or 4 times. One time to open an investment account at OCBC Bank while the other few occasions came here for dinner with my children. Queenstown is renowned for her many firsts in Singapore. The first National Library, the first polyclinic, the first HDB flats, the first Sports Stadium were all built here but till to date, none of the banks is willing to be the first to open a branch in Queenstown. The nearest bank branches are at Tiong Bahru Plaza with OCBC, POSB, Bank of China and UOB all lined up near the entrances of the mall. Today, I was not here for any bank transactions. Just accompanied my wife for window shopping.

The Plaza is quite big comprising 5 Storeys including a basement. I know best the eateries at the 2nd floor as I previously patronized the A-One Signature; the Tongue Tip Lanzhou Beef Noodles and the Ajisen Ramen with my children. However, the business at the second floor is not that roaring as that at Kopitiam which is located at the 3rd floor. The number of food stalls at the kopitiam are not many, yet it was quite densely crowded today. Maybe these kopitiam food stalls offered a cheaper option than the eateries at the 2nd floor.

The layout of this mall looks compact. The atrium stalls occupied almost the entire space at the first floor. I prefer Bukit Panjang Plaza or Lot One mall which look more spacious and easier to locate the shops and eateries. Due to their close proximity to the entrances, Starbucks, Macdonald, BreadTalk, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Paris Baguette, these few eateries seem to attract more customers. The Japanese restaurant, Sushiro at the 2nd floor also attracted quite a queue. The many facial shops, hair salons and beauty salons at the 3rd floor reminds me of KSL mall in JB except that there are no massage shop here.

For the cost conscious, they probably like shops like Daiso, Value $, Fairprice Finest, SKP, and Kopitiam. Most of the garment shops here are also for the budget conscious. I suppose the mall operator knows of the profile of his customers. Tiong Bahru is an old estate, and the senior citizens may not have the money to spend on luxurious items.

From Tiong Bahru Plaza, we also wandered to Beo Crescent to have our dinner at the hawker center. After the dinner, took the free shuttle bus back to IKEA. A fruitful Sunday out.

Mid size neighbourhood mall. Lots of F&Bs to choose from and some popular brands to do some lazy Sunday shopping. Conveniently located above Tiong Bahru MRT.

It is a neighbourhood mall to me, nothing much but have some good food and retail brands such as Cotton On and soup spoon. Aside from that not much choices for shopping and entertainment

An old shopping mall (though “renovated”) in the mature tiong bahru estate. No luxury brands of course, but they do have bank branches and cineplex

It used to be a very homely place to go to. After the revamp, it doesn't fell that way anymore. The foodcourt is packed and sometimes dirty, and water leaks from the ceiling. It leaked onto my food, probably from the aircons, and I wrote a feedback to Asiamall management but they didnt even bother to reply. Tells a lot about the maintenance team there.

I was struggling to find good places to eat street type food without the tourist prices. So I asked some people who pointed me to the Tiong Bahru food court. The prices are so low that you can try a few dishes and atill have change in your pocket. I opted for the Hananese chicken rice combo and a keow teow both of which were excellent, fresh and well prepared with authentic flavours for sgd9 which I thought was great value. The locals tend to gravitate to this place so you know its going to be good.
There is an assortment of other Asian cuisines ao plenty to chose from and apease most taste buds.

We visited the mall on our way back from Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre. The mall is situated on top of the Tiong Bahru MRT station. Loads of food options decent shopping gets really busy during peak hours because of the MRT. We found a small playground on the 3rd floor which is what made us stay. Open air but sheltered a lot of local kids were there my kids had a great time made friends even though isn't the biggest but fun enough for the little ones.
