In my 3 months of travel through Southeast Asia, this was by far the most disturbing place I went to. Yes, there were hanging baskets full of different and exotic bird species but there were also monkeys, turtles, bats, cats, a python and other reptiles. I can say with no hesitation, that most of the animals were in extremely cramped quarters, dirty cages, and living in unsanitary and unsafe conditions. The were clearly stressed and I took pictures of because I want people to see so you don't need to go. I tried to get images of the poor monkeys but, was instructed not to.

Your going, it keeps this place open and it is most definitely a place that should not be. Cultural differences aside, this is just not a place that should be a tourist attraction unless you like to see animal cruelty and love being depressed.

Birds are a vey popular pet in such a crowded city and the variety here is awesome. there were lots of birds for sale. There were also lots of exotic animals and parakeets for sale. It was a unique experience and while I could not buy, it was really worth a look.

WARNING. My husband said it was like a concentration camp for birds and other animals and I have to agree on that.

We miss understood our Becak driver and thought it was a boat market but instead it was a bird market...

It was terrible. Small cages for big birds as owls. Small puppies and kittens laid down and seemed to be traumatised. No, if have any feelings for animals, please don't come here.

If you are an animal lover this is probably not a place you should go to unless you want to confront yourself with the reality of how animals are kept and treated here. As many pointed out it's not just a bird market, they offer all sorts from cats and dogs over to reptiles, civets, monkeys etc. We saw a baby monkey which could have only been a few weeks old, sitting in a cage on it's own, starving to death, completely apathetic. Some Chinese tourists wanted a picture with it and hit it on the head so it would look up....it was awful. If no one bought it I am pretty sure it will have died a few days later as it was already so weak. There were quite a few endangered species here and there are a lot of indoor facilities that you do not have access to, but I assume that you can get everything on this market that you ask for. Don't buy anything here, even if it breaks your heart as it just supports the trade even more.

Tourists who want to see animal race culture and what kind Indonesian's pet, can visit this market.

Many kind of bird, roast and hen, reptiles, dog and cat are exist in here. Even somehow, the way they cure the animal is very poor and unstandard.

But I saw few tourist reading a book in the chair while listening to the bird sing.

It's also good for Indonesian to educate their children about flora and fauna.

Across the bird market, there is plant and tree market. Both are free entrance. Tourist can use public transportation such as shuttle bus transjogja or online taxi.

I had a hard time seeing all of these animals cage up. Some of the birds were over crowded in the cages. I wasn't quit sure what to think about the whole market. I wanted to believe that people would buy these animals and treat them humanly. I kept wondering if there are that many people in the area who wanted all of these birds. Not an uplifting or terribly interesting site.

If it was only a bird market, it would have been fine, although the birds are kept in small cages. But it's not only birds! Cats, dogs, monkeys, owls, otters etc. are piled up in cages and you can see their distress. The summum : painted chicks! Terrible ! Don't know if by stopping tourists to go there the activity can stop, as it seems to be a major social place for locals, especially for men, but it's definitely not a nice "attraction"...

I came here as I was trying to kill my time. As the name itself, you may see a lot kinds of bird display there. I managed to see a baby owl displayed there. Besides that, you can see lots kind of animals such as kittens/cats, rabbits, coloured chicks, dogs/puppies or even snakes in that area. In the middle of the market, there is a hall where bird competition will be held. Its a good place to visit especially if you are brinigng small kids as they will enjoy their trip in there.
