Beautiful Linggu Temple in the purple mountain area. Famous vegetarian restaurant that serves only one item . Vegetable noodle soup with or without boiled egg

The three main sites to visit in Zijin Mountain Scenic Area, just east of Nanjing's city centre, are all worth the effort, but the effort is supreme. The Linggu Temple is very hard on the feet to visit and if you have any sort of mobility issue, do not even consider coming here. Surprisingly, China makes little (or in this case none at all) allowances for people with disabilities. Even if you use the (somewhat pricey) park provided transportation to get to the gate of the Linggu scenic area, the walk one you enter is difficult enough. The area is spread out, with the temple being the most interesting spot to visit and it's relatively quiet, with few crowds. The beamless hall is quite a trek from there and is worth seeing for the waxworks history display. The climb to the pagoda is the hardest part of all and it has about 300 internal stone steps up a twisting staircase to reach the top. It's really not worth it. Once at the top, you'll get great views, but the pagoda is empty and isn't all that interesting. Then you have to come all the way back down again and take the same lengthy exit walk back to the park. Even the fit and strong will find this very trying, particularly if you've already visited the Ming Tomb or the Sun Yat Sen Memorial, or are planning to. They all have equally harsh distances to cover on foot. Make sure you buy the combined park ticket for RMB100 as that gives a small price break. The 202 bus from the city centre drops you almost at the beginning of the Linggu area of the park. The fare is only RMB2 from the city centre and back again.

LINGGU TEMPLE (The Soul Valley Temple)
Linggu Temple Scenic Area is the third most beautiful expanse at the southern slope of Purple Mountain (Mount Zijin), in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing city, better known as Purple Mountain Scenic Area, besides Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat Sen and Xiaoling Mausoleum of Ming Dynasty. The entry fee to the Linggu Scenic Area is 35 Yuan (6 US$) in April 2016. It is about 4-5 hour entertainment area for tourists with limited time.
Once called Kaishan Temple, Linggu Temple was built 1500 years ago in 515 AD during Liang Dynasty. The present name was given to the temple by Ming emperor Zhu in 1368. Once it was considered the best Buddhist temples in the world, with an area of 74 acre. It was destroyed around 1858 AD and rebuilt in the next decade. It is surrounded by centuries old trees and a wonderful park adorned with a number of magnificent buildings including Beamless Hall, splendid pavilions including Songfeng Pavilion, a nine-storey 200 feet high pagoda, etc. The temple also houses the ‘Three Superb Tablet’ with masterpieces of three great Chinese masters, a painter, a poet and a calligrapher. No visit to Nanjing is complete without a visit to this scenic area.

The temple close very early at 4:30pm. There is a pagoda and an exhibit that was said to be worth the visit. However, as I arrive at 4:30pm, I am only able to view the closing of the temple

After the busy-ness of the Sun-Yat Sen Mausoleum the Linggu area is beautifully quiet, especially just before closing. The Beamless Hall is tranquil and the views from the pagoda are worth the stairs. I also liked the temple.
Entry is included in the 100 RMB Zhongshan area ticket. I got the sightseeing shuttle from the Sun-Yat Sen carpark but afterwards caught the 202 bus back to the metro - every 15 minutes or so, 2 RMB.

The temple area is large and you need to walk to get to all the sections. First up would be the Beamless Hall, with three archways on the front and rear sides respectively. The structure was built with bricks from the bottom to the top entirely, without a piece of wood or a single nail. In 1928, the hall was turned into a memorial hall for soldiers who lost their lives in the Northern Expedition. (1926 -1928) . In one of the temples, one can see statues of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. In another temple, one can see the statue of the famous monk Tang Xuanzang and his enshrined relics. One can also get to the vegetarian restaurant to have your meals.

Building is pretty impressive structure for 14th century but real interest is that it contains a fairly unadvertised wax museum of tableaux of Chinese history in 19th and 20th C. Including lots about Opium Wars, Boxer rebellion, Dowager Empress, Sun Yat-sen and up to Communist victory. Very interesting to learn about early feminist revolutionary Qiu jin (decapitated 1907). unfortunately all signs only in Chinese. However, with some knowledge of Chinese history quite a bit is understandable. (As far as I know there are no guided tours.)

I visited here in March 2017. The Linggu Scenic area is part of the Purple Mountain complex. After visiting the Dr. Sun Yatsen burial place, you can take a tram to the entrance of the Linggu Scenic area or walk 1.5 miles as I did. After buying your ticket, you pass through a famous red gate. You keep walking past more gates and an indoor exhibit of artifacts. Finally you reach an area where you can see the Linggu Pagoda and find your way to the Linggu Si (Linggu Temple). This temple does not look like much from the outside but it seems to go on forever. It is a typical Chinese Buddhist temple with Buddha statutes, incense and many other things. If you like walking and visiting a lot of interesting places, then I recommend the Purple Mountain as a must see.

This area was one of the four locations on the multi ticket that I bought when I visited the Ming tombs, and it is one of the three major locations to visit on purple mountain.
The temple itself was nice, but not overly impressive. What I really enjoyed was the pagoda at the back. The pagoda is a war memorial, and if you climb to the top, you will get an amazing view of the Purple Mountain and Nanjing.
There was also a cemetery up there for people who died in the war. It was very tranquil.

The Lingu temple scenic area is quieter than the other major tourist attractions on Purple mountain and there is opportunity to enjoy the place without being in a crowd. The main sites in the park are the focal points for tourists (the temple, the pagoda and the Beamless Hall) and should all be seen, but you can also enjoy the quiet places in between. The pagoda is definitely worth climbing.
